SAFV Launches

Annual Virtual

Summer Fundraiser

Sitkans Against Family Violence is conducting a week of virtual fundraising Aug. 9-14.

Friends and supporters of the organization can help meet the goal of raising $12,000 by contributing any amount they can.

Funds enable SAFV to continue offering free and confidential services to victims and survivors of interpersonal violence, their friends and loved ones, while also running prevention programs which empower children and youths to model respect and non-violence, the organization said.

SAFV is again operating under strict COVID-19 policies and offers advocacy and referrals via phone and text line.

“Last year, we launched our first virtual fundraiser to mend the funding gap created by cancelling one of our main annual fundraisers,” said Natalie Wojcik, executive director. “We are still in the midst of the pandemic, and decided to continue our virtual fundraiser on an annual basis. We cannot do our work without the financial support of our wonderful community members, and are grateful for all those who stand behind our mission .”

Donors can access SAFV online on Facebook and at the website safv.org. Credit card donations will be processed through PayPal, and checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 6136, Sitka, AK 99835.

For more information, contact  Wojcik at 747-3491 or director@safv.org.

Summer Troll

Fishery Updated

The Southeast Alaska/Yakutat commercial troll fishery will close 11:59 p.m. Aug. 7, except within the hatchery chum salmon and terminal harvest open areas.

The fishery will be closed for five days, Aug. 8-12, and then reopen to the taking of all salmon including chinook at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 13.

It will remain open until a total of 53,000 chinook salmon are caught. The department anticipates the harvest target will be taken within the range of seven to 10 days.

Trollers are being encouraged to contact the troll fishery managers during the retention period to report harvest and effort information via phone (747-6688; voicemail available after hours, dial * and extension 237) or email grant.hagerman@alaska.gov or mike.vaughn@alaska.gov.

More information on the fishery can be seen at www.adfg.alaska.gov.
