Two fishermen aboard a 56-foot longliner, the F/V Castaway, were rescued by the Coast Guard early Sunday after the boat ran aground on the west side of Zarembo Island, some 100 miles southeast of Sitka.
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter crew launched at 2:30 a.m. but the two fishermen declined to be hoisted. The Coast Guard Cutter Kukui, also from Sitka, was in the area and sent a small boat to pick up the two and offer other help. The helicopter returned to Sitka at 5:20 a.m. while the Kukui remained in the area as repairs were made.
A salvage company refloated the boat Sunday.
Marine Safety Detachment of Ketchikan is investigating the grounding, the Coast Guard said.
