Four members of the Sitka Fire Department search and rescue team was en route at press time today to help a 26-year-old Juneau hiker who had fallen down a cliff and become stranded on Mt. Roberts around midnight last night.
The Coast Guard said the Sitka air station received a call at 12:04 a.m. today from the command center in Juneau asking for a Sitka helicopter, after the Juneau Mountain Rescue team was unable to reach the man, who was cold and wet, and had minor injuries.
After the cloud ceiling fell to 1,500 feet, the helicopter crew also was unable to reach the man, and returned to Sitka after two and a half hours.
This morning, four members of the SFD rescue team were preparing to board an Air Station Sitka helicopter after 10 a.m. to fly to Juneau with climbing equipment. The Coast Guard said the team was to be dropped off in Juneau, get up the mountain on the tram, and hike to the man from there, weather permitting.
