With four days to go before the deadline, only three candidates have filed so far to fill the six open seats on the Assembly and School Board.

Kevin Mosher and Steven Eisenbeisz are running for mayor. Mosher has been on the Assembly for four years, and Eisenbeisz was elected mayor in 2020 and served on the Assembly for two terms before that.

There are two three-year seats to be filled on the Assembly,in addition to the two-year mayor position.

Thor Christianson and Kevin Knox are the Assembly members whose terms are expiring. Christianson has said he plans to seek another term, and Knox, who has served the last six years, said he will not run this fall.

There are three openings on the School Board, and only one candidate so far, Tristan Guevin. Paul Rioux, whose three-year term is expiring, says he does not plan to run for another term. The two other openings are for remainders of the terms of members who resigned. One is for a two-year term and the other is for one year. Guevin was one of the appointees, and the other, Mitch Mork, has said he plans to run also.

Valorie Nelson, who was mayor for two years and on the Assembly for six, said today she plans to run for mayor.

The deadline to file is 5 p.m. Friday. Filing packets can be picked up in the clerk’s office at city hall. Those with questions may call 907-747-1811.

There are two propositions on the ballot. One proposes replacing the city sales tax on marijuana with a special 6 percent tax with proceeds dedicated to school activities.

The other would dedicate the $8.18 million in net proceeds from the Sitka Community Hospital sale to the construction of a boat haulout and boatyard at Gary Paxton Industrial Park.
