Sitkan Gets Early

Start at College

Esther Burdick, a senior at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, has joined the fall  class at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the nation’s first early college.

‘‘It’s not every day that students start college early, but this Sitka resident is no ordinary student,’’ Bard said in a news release.

Burdick’s academic and personal achievements stood out, securing her a spot at Simon’s Rock this fall. The college is home to about 400 students who engage in a rigorous liberal arts and sciences curriculum and graduate from college one or two years ahead of their peers, the college said.

She is the daughter of Phil Burdick and Sarah Ferrency of Sitka.

Donations are being accepted at www.redcross.org/Alaska.

Nearly 90 percent of its services are performed by a network of volunteers from across the state. The Red Cross of Alaska is supported by 582 volunteers statewide who have logged more than 40,000 volunteer hours in 2020 to support of the American Red Cross mission.

This year in Alaska, the Red Cross responded to 401 disasters in 55 communities. Volunteers provided food, shelter, comfort, relief supplies, and recovery planning to 1,024 individuals and families in need.  Furthermore, 143 Alaska residents were served by the Red Cross of Alaska health and mental health volunteers following local disasters.
