Advisory Meets

The Sitka Fish and Game Advisory Committee has announced three upcoming meetings via Zoom to finish comments on remaining Board of Fisheries proposals.

Elders Talking

Circle Offered

An Elders Talking Circle is being offered via Facebook 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday by the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska.

Nancy Douglas and Kitty Eddy will instruct elders on how to make wooden ornaments.

The talking circle will be led by Tlingit & Haida employees Will Kronick and Ann Stepetin as a live event at www.facebook.com/ccthita.

Eddy is Taku Kwaan, Yanyeidi. She co-founded the Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy (TCLL) program with her sister, Nancy Douglas. Ms. Kitty taught with the Juneau School District for 31 years and directed camps for Tlingit & Haida, Sealaska Heritage Institute and other organizations.

Douglas also is Taku Kwaan, Yanyeidi. In Juneau, she worked with TCLL, Sealaska Heritage Institute and other organizations to create culturally-based programming before moving to Sitka to become the cultural programs director for the Sitka School District.

They have dedicated their lives to academic excellence by teaching the art, science and mathematics inherent to the Tlingit way of life.

Firewood Offered

To Tribal Citizens

Chopped, delivered and stacked firewood is being offered to Tribal citizens through the Sitka Tribe of Alaska.

Call Jade Nodes at 747-7245 to get on the delivery list. Deliveries will be completed in January.

 

Quilt Drawing

Tickets Available

Sitka Maritime Heritage Society is offering tickets on a drawing for a chance to win prizes, including a quilt created by Joanna Perensovich.

The quilt, ‘‘A Beacon Bright,’’ is 64 by 52 inches. Other prizes are a framed art print by Steve Mayo and a handheld VHF radio from LFS Marine.

A total of 500 tickets are available at $20 each. The drawing is March 24.

Energy Assistance

Offered by STA

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is being offered by Sitka Tribe of Alaska.

STA has heating assistance funds for eligible households with at least one member who is Alaska Native or American Indian.

STA can provide up to $1,690 a year to assist with heating bills, including electric, gas, fuel oil or wood. Also available is up to $2,500 for repair or replacement of faulty heating systems.

Amount of assistance depends on household size, income, heating bills, fuel type and availability of funds.

Southeast Alaska Independent Living has activities scheduled this week.

A ceramics studio is offered 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sitka Hiking Club will hike Silver Bay 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday.
