Big Brothers Big Sisters
Get Grant for New Program
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska has received a new grant that will fund up to 10 additional matches in Sitka and Haines from Dec. 3 through June 30.
Youths ages 6 to 16 are matched with an adult mentor based on their shared personalities and interests. To be eligible, volunteers and youths must make a commitment to meet two to four times per month for a year doing free or low-cost activities.
The grant funds were awarded through the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund. Funding will allow the agency to pilot a virtual enrollment process that was created to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on youths.
In 2018, program offices in Sitka and Haines were closed to making new matches, but current matches have continued to receive regular match support and guidance from the agency. At this time, no plans are in place to reopen the local offices. The virtual enrollment process will be conducted remotely with local staff providing support once the matches have been made.
“The Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund grant has come at a critical time for youths,” said Kealoha Harmon, senior customer relations and enrollment specialist. “We know that more kids than ever are feeling disconnected from their friends, routines, and support systems. This grant allows us to connect more youths with caring adult mentors.”
