Dies in Sitka

Larry Linden Bayne, 79, a longtime Sitka resident, died this morning at SEARHC-Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center.

 

Avalanche Danger

Alerts Announced

The U.S. Forest Service has warned of an increased risk of avalanches in the Sitka Ranger District due to high snow levels and fluctuating temperatures.

Officials said avalanches have occurred on Harbor Mountain, Blue Lake Road and other areas around Sitka.

‘‘Please take extra precaution and be aware of your surroundings while you enjoy the snow,’’ the ranger district said. ‘‘Be careful and stay safe on the Tongass National Forest.’’

 

Roadless Rule

Gathering Set

The Roadless Rule reinstatement comment gathering event is planned 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association, 304 Baranof Street.

 

Seafood Donation

Program Slated

Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association will take applications for its seafood donation program from those experiencing food insecurity or financial hardship 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16.

Anna J. Bradley

Services Saturday

Services for Anna J. Bradley, 56, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Sitka Assembly of God. They will be open to the public and streamed online. She died Nov. 30.

Search on Facebook Sitka Assembly of God and the stream should start at 2 p.m., the family said. A table will be set up next to the entryway for people to drop off letters to Anna’s family, especially older ones from local islanders.

The family is accepting donations at ALPS under ‘‘Anna Bradley Memorial Fund.’’ 

A full obituary will be printed on Dec. 16.

 

Model Train Village,

Gingerbread House

Contest Saturday

Sitka Historical Society and Museum’s 2nd annual model train Christmas village and gingerbread house decorating contest will be noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Centennial Hall lobby.

The gingerbread house decorating contest is open to all ages. Prizes are being donated by AC Lakeside and First National Bank Alaska.

Entries can be taken to the museum anytime before the event. For information call 907-738-3766.

Attendees can see the vintage electric trains running through a Christmas village. AC Lakeside’s cocoa corral will include cookies and hot chocolate.

The model train Christmas village will be on display through Jan. 1.

Santa Claus will be available for photo opportunities. Attendees can visit with the Grinch.

 

Christmas Service

At St. Peter’s

St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church will hold services during Christmas weekend.

They include: 6 p.m. Dec. 24, via Zoom; 10 a.m. Dec. 25, in person; and 8:30 a.m. Dec. 26 in person and 10 a.m. on Zoom.
