Art Show, Open

Studio Thursday

Local artists will host an open studio evening and art show 7-11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Yaw Arts Center on the SJ Campus.

It will feature photography, collage, a “mending table” and more. 

Local artists Ellie Schmidt, Alyssa Russel, Annika Ord and Eli Evans will be displaying their art, including underwater photographs, collage, painting, prints and other items. Some of the art will be available for purchase. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available.

 

Calvary Chapel

Meets Sunday

A special Christmas message “Adopted By God Through Christmas and Joyous Feast of Dedication (Hannukah)” will be given 3 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Chapel Sitka.

The group meets at the Methodist Church on Kimsham Street. Contact Pastor Dug at 747-5454 for information.

For Christmas

The Light of Christmas Celebration will be held at the First Baptist Church 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22.

‘‘The Christmas Story’’ will be simply portrayed by the children, with the choir backing them up with song. Sylvia Rylander will play a solo on the hand bells.

At 6 p.m. that evening, Rylander will perform a free hand bell concert. 

On Christmas Eve at 6:30 p.m. the public is invited to a candlelight service. 

‘‘Everyone is invited to join in the singing and learn how so many ‘Missed the First Christmas,’’’ the church said in a press release. ‘‘We will also encourage the children to come on stage and participate with the reading of the ‘Biblical Christmas Story.’’’

Everyone will be given a candle to light as the group sings “Silent Night” in celebration of the true “Light of Christmas.”

 

St. Peter’s Invites

Public to Services

St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church will hold the following services over the Christmas season.

The community is invited to: the Children’s Christmas Pageant at 10 a.m. on Dec. 22; Christmas Eve services which begin with prelude music at 6:30 p.m. followed by a service at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24; the Christmas Day service, held jointly with Sitka Lutheran and Sitka Methodist Church, 10 a.m. Dec. 25 at the Pioneers Home; and Christmas Lessons and Carols service,  10 a.m. Dec. 29.

Crafting Events

At SJ Museum

The Sheldon Jackson Museum will offer two programs for children on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Creative Play, a new, free program for ages 5 and younger, will run 10-11 a.m. It focuses on fostering social skills, movement and creativity, and gives parents and their children a place to gather for imaginative play with sensory toys. A parent must be present and should call 747-8981 to register. 

Also on Dec. 21, a Cookies and Crafts ornament-making event, will be noon-3:30 p.m., or until supplies run out. The free event is for  children of all ages. It does not require registration, but does require a parent to be present.

Christmas Sale

At White E Shop

All Christmas items at the White Elephant Shop will be half-price beginning Thursday, Dec. 19. Store hours are noon-3 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, and 6-8 p.m. Monday.

 

Legion Baseball

Meeting on Tap

Sitka’s American Legion Baseball Post 13 will hold a meeting for prospective players, parents and interested community members 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Centennial Hall.

The newly formed program is for players ages 14 -19, with games scheduled for June-July (following the high school baseball season). Thirteen-year-olds may try out. 

The league is also seeking coaches, umpires, volunteers and donors to help launch this new program.
