Sitka 4-H Raises Funds for Sitka Animal Shelter
Members of the Alaska Way of Life 4-H Club recently came together to raise funds for the Sitka Animal Shelter by making and selling dog treats.
The club is supported by a partnership between the Sitka Conservation Society and UAF Cooperative Extension, and strives to teach youths skills necessary to live with the land and build community. To this end, the kids made and packaged homemade dog treats to sell at the Made in Sitka Holiday Market this year. The primary ingredient was pink and chum salmon donated by the Sitka Sound Science Center for a session earlier in the fall where 4-Hers learned how to filet the Alaskan fish. Rather than throwing out the scraps from the exercise, 4-Hers decided to save them to make dog treats at a later date.
The group raised $208 for the Friends of the Sitka Animal Shelter, and donated the remaining treats to the shelter.
Club members expressed appreciation to the Sitka Sound Science Center, Renée Trafton of Beak Restaurant, Sitka Youth Community Development Catalyst Emily Pound, and Kirsten Haas for helping them give back to the community.
Buoy-Painting
Session Jan. 5
Sitka Sound Science Center is inviting ‘‘makers, recyclers and those who enjoy beachy vibes’’ to a buoy painting session 5-7 p.m. Jan. 5 in the center’s Karsh classroom.
A creative space with materials and paints will be provided for the self-directed project. Participants can take their own materials as well.
SSSC will give information on marine debris in the Sitka area and ideas on how plastics can be creatively re-used.
‘‘Please consider donating an artistically transformed buoy to the 2023 Buoy & Art fundraiser for Brave Heart Volunteers,’’ SSSC said.
Those with questions can call Michele at (907) 752-0472.
