Poet to Speak

At Sitka Event

Denver-based poet Sueyeun Juliette Lee will give a talk 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Sitka Public Library multipurpose room.

Author Longenbaugh

To Speak at Library

Juneau author Betsy Longenbaugh will speak 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Sitka Public Library.

Copies of her recent book, ‘‘Forgotten Murders from Alaska’s Capital,’’ will be available for purchase from Old Harbor Books. The event is open to the public, and registration is not required. For information, call Margot at 747-4020 or e-mail margot.oconnell@cityofsitka.org.

 

Nativity Services

At St. Michael Set

Nativity services at St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral will begin with the Royal Hours 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6 – the Eve of Nativity. The Vigil service will begin at 5 p.m. Friday.

On Christmas morning, Jan. 7, Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:30 a.m.  Daily Vespers will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Divine Liturgy is scheduled 9:30 a.m. Sunday and Monday mornings, as well.

Nativity starring, the Orthodox equivalent of caroling and sharing the joy of the Birth of Christ, will begin following the 4 p.m. Vesperal services on Sunday and Monday. Requests for starring visits may be directed to KathyHope Erickson at 907-738-1119, or Father Ishmael Andrew at 907-747-8120.

All in Sitka are invited to the services, and choir members are especially called to attend.

 

Alaska Pioneers

To Meet Jan. 5

Pioneers of Alaska Sitka Igloo will meet 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 5 at Centennial Hall.

Sitka Igloo will host the potluck meal, providing the ham and dessert. Side dishes are welcome.

A short program will be on Alaska history. Residents of at least 20 years are invited to attend. For more information call 907-738-8891.

 

Library Grind

Set for Jan. 14

Sitka Monthly Grind will host the Library Grind in observance of the Sitka Public Library’s 100th anniversary 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Old Harbor Books.

Attendees can take a homemade dessert to share and be part of the dessert contest.

The philosophy remains, in its 28th year, nonpolitical, affordable and family entertainment. Those with questions can call Jeff at (907) 747-4821.

 

Firearms Safety

Class for Youths

Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H Club will host a seven-week series for ages 9-18 to learn the safe and responsible use of firearms through the Alaska 4-H Shooting Sports Program.

4-H promotes the sporting tradition, conservation, environmentally friendly and ethically responsible outdoor pursuits and develops youths’ life skills to meet the societal demands of the 21st century.

Sessions will be held on Saturdays starting Jan. 21 with ages 12-18 meeting 12:30-2 p.m. and ages 9-11 meeting 2-3:30 p.m. at the Sitka Sportsman’s Association, 5211 Halibut Point Road. The program carries a supply fee of $50 with scholarships available.
