Correction

In Monday’s front page story about the apparent mud volcano on the floor of Nakwasina Sound, it was stated that two people were on the vessel that located the underwater cone.

There were three on board. The Sentinel regrets the error.

 

School’s Out

Students and staff of the Sitka School District will be on winter break Dec. 19-Jan. 5. No classes will be held and school offices will be closed.

The district office will have limited and irregular hours Dec. 19-Jan. 4.

 

Fender Bender

Workshop Dec. 10

The Salty Spoke Bike Coop will hold a “Fender Bender” workshop  Saturday, Dec. 10, behind Beak Restaurant.

Individuals can drop by anytime  between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to learn how to make their own bike fender using old political signs. 

‘‘We have signs on hand, or you can bring your own,’’ said Alyssa Russell, Salty Spoke co-lead.

 

Recorded ‘Messiah’

Performance Shown

A recorded performance of the sacred oratorio ‘‘Messiah’’ will be hosted 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Grace Harbor Church.

‘‘Ever since it was first performed in 1742 Handel’s ‘Messiah’ has inspired listeners,’’ the church said. ‘‘For many years it has been associated with Christmas.’’

A handout listing the scripture references will be given. A short intermission is planned as the complete work is more than two hours long.

No admission fee will be charged or requests for donations made.

Grace Harbor Church is at 1904 Halibut Point Road, across the street from Sea Mart.

The community is invited to attend.

 

Babies and Books

Program Dec. 17

Sitka Babies and Books invites families of children ages birth to 4 to an Olaf the Snowman’s Ball 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Sitka Public Library. 

Children, parents and caregivers are welcome to enjoy a morning of all-things-Olaf, organizers said.

Registration is required to receive a copy of a free book with a winter theme. Books are purchased with a grant from Sitka Legacy Foundation, an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation. For information call the library at 747- 4020 or e-mail maite.lorente@cityofsitka.org. 

 

‘Crafternoon’ Event

At Public Library

Sitka Public Library is offering a DIY holiday gifts program for youths age 10 years and older 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Participants will receive free materials to work on a few projects to keep or give away. Everyone is welcome, and registration is preferred.

Sitka Skippers

Set to Perform

The Sitka Skippers jump rope team will perform a halftime show at the Sitka High School 6 p.m. boys basketball game against Nikiski 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15.

‘‘It has been over two years since the Skippers have performed at a SHS basketball game and they are excited to take center court,’’ a press release said.
