A Sitka man was taken to the hospital but apparently was uninjured in the wreck of his Chevy pickup as it  plowed through fences and yards Thursday evening in the 600 block of Sawmill Creek Road.

Sitka police Sgt. Lance Ewers said the department received “multiple 911 calls” about the accident just after 5 p.m.

“Thankfully there was nobody hurt,” he said.

The accident occurred after the driver suffered a medical emergency, and lost consciousness, authorities said.

The pickup was heading into town at about 25 mph when it crossed the center line, ran through fences and struck a fire hydrant and a power pole before coming to rest. One of the tires was pulled off the vehicle as it continued down the road, Ewers said.

The investigation is continuing, but Ewers said he does not expect any charges will be filed. A collision report will be filed with the state.

The accident was captured on the dashboard camera of a vehicle that had stopped nearby as its driver picked up her mail, Ewers said.

The street, which is a state highway, was closed off while the ambulance responded and the vehicle and other debris were removed. Ewers said there was a good response from law enforcement, fire department and public works.

He estimated damage to be in the thousands of dollars.

“This is a good example of why insurance is required – because accidents happen,” Ewers said.
