Steven Eisenbeisz became the first candidate in the Oct. 4 city election today, filing for a second term as mayor.
Today was the first day of the filing period, which will close Aug. 5.
“I believe the city is headed toward a prosperous place,” Eisenbeisz said, “but I believe we need stability on the Assembly.”
Eisenbeisz, 37, was elected mayor in 2020 after serving two three-year terms on the Assembly.
“If nothing else, in the last two years I’ve provided stability on the Assembly and I want to see that continue forward, and that the great initiatives we’ve started can continue forward and be seen through,” he said.
Eisenbeisz has lived in Sitka since his family moved here in 1992. He is the co-owner of the Lincoln Street clothing and sporting goods store Russell’s.
Also open in the election are two three-year Assembly seats, currently held by Thor Christianson and Kevin Knox. Christianson said today he plans to seek re-election, and Knox said he’s not running. Kevin Mosher, who has two years to go in his current term on the Assembly, said Friday he plans to run for mayor.
The School Board has three open seats, one for three years, and the other two for one and two years respectively because two members resigned before completing their terms. Candidates run at large, with the different terms being awarded in order to the top three finishers.
Paul Rioux, who was elected in 2019, said last week he’s not running for another term on the board this fall. Mitch Mork, one of the two appointees to the board, said he plans to run for election to the board, and Tristan Guevin said Friday he’s still deciding.
Filing packets are available at the city clerk’s office on the third floor of city hall. Those with questions may call 907-747-1811 or 907-747-1826. The filing deadline in August 5.
