Harvey Kitka had seven write-in votes, for the position of chairman.
Since the margin of victory is within 1 percent, a candidate may ask for a recount, said STA General Manager Lisa Gassman today. So far, none has been requested.
Four members were elected to the council: Nancy Douglas, who received 112 votes; Michael Miller, 106; Robert Sam, 96; and Lillian E. Feldpausch, 95. The fifth candidate, Sonya Smith, received 79.
There were also write-in votes for council: Harvey Kitka, 52, and Judy Brady, 8.
A total of 167 ballots were cast, and the results will be certified at noon Nov. 21 at Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.
Election supervisor Rosalind Demmert, who was appointed by the Tribal Council, provided the election results.
The council members will serve beginning December 1, 2018, through November 30, 2020, STA said in a news release.
“Sitka Tribe of Alaska would like to thank all of the candidates who ran for office as well as those citizens who participated in the political process by voting. Finally, we would also like to thank Harvey Kitka, Tribal Council member. Your years of service and contributions to the Tribe are greatly appreciated,” STA said.
