Explosives experts from the FBI and state fire marshal’s office arrived in town today after being notified by the city that 8.5 sticks of “explosive material” had been found on the cross trail, at the top of Charteris Street, Sitka Fire Department engineer Craig Warren reported today.
Warren said a hiker reported finding the material 30 feet off the trail at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. The origin is not known, he added. Police and fire departments posted “hazardous material” signs at the trail heads at Cascade and Charteris Streets.
“The FBI will decide how best to take care of it,” Warren said. He noted the material looks “extremely old.”
