Annual Meeting

Set for Feb. 18

Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum will hold its annual meeting 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Aspen Suite Hotel Raven Room and simultaneously on Zoom.

Guest speaker Desiree Jackson will present “Sample the Season: An Introduction to Locally Harvested Foods.”   Locally harvested food’s cultural, medicinal, and nutritional benefits will be presented from a holistic lens. Also discussed will be traditional harvesting and knowledge of the Tlingit people, coupled with a contemporary understanding and knowledge.

Jackson is the executive director at Goldbelt Heritage Foundation. She is of Tlingit descent and belongs to the Tsaagweidi clan.

She is a registered dietitian who specializes in Alaska Native traditional and customary diet. With more than 20 years of tribal health experience, Jackson has authored books on the benefits of traditional diet and the nutrient content of Alaska Native foods. Utilizing social media and videography, she has developed award-winning campaigns showcasing the preservation of Alaska Native diet and culture.

In addition, she has created university-level curriculum and taught coursework around community interventions and lifespan nutrition.

Business Property

Declarations Due

Business personal property declarations are due Feb. 15, the city assessing department said.

All business personal property subject to taxation is to be itemized and declared. A declaration form can be requested by emailing assessing@cityofsitka.org. 

Declarations can be returned to the Assessor’s Office, 100 Lincoln Street, Sitka, AK 99835 or emailed to assessing@cityofsitka.org.

Declarations must be postmarked or received by 4 p.m. Feb. 15 to avoid a $100 late fee and to receive the filing- on-time $25,000 assessed value exemption, per Alaska State Statute, the city said.

Sitka Rush Soccer Club is kicking off its spring season in March. The youth program is open to all experience levels and age groups kindergarten through 12th grades.

The L’uknax.adi (Coho Clan) will meet 12:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Kaayaashka Hit Mother Coho House to plan the upcoming koo.eex’.

Piano Concert

Listed for Sunday

Sitka Fine Arts Camp will present a piano concert with Oskar Yao 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

The concert will feature music by Brahms and Liszt, and an original composition by Yao. The concert is pay-what-you-can at the door. For more information call 907-747-3085. 

 

Banff Film Fest

Screened Feb. 24

Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour brings the spirit of outdoor adventure to the Performing Arts Center 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

It is sponsored by the Hames Center, a program of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

Voice and Piano

Concert Feb. 25

Sitka Fine Arts Camp will present an evening of voice and piano at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Performing Arts Center.

It will feature Latvia-based pianist Robert Fleitz and Sitka-based soprano Rhiannon Guevin.

‘‘Go on a journey through the world of opera and art song from Debussy to Mozart and Donizetti followed by musical theater solos and duets by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, and more,’’ organizers said.

Early Dismissal

The Sitka School District announces that all schools will be dismissed early on Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, Feb. 16. Lunches will be served.

Schools will be dismissed as follows: first grade and bus, 11:45 a.m.; kindergarten pick-up, noon; grades two through five, noon; Pacific High School, 12:30 p.m.; Blatchley Middle School, 12:45 p.m.; Sitka High School 12:50 p.m.
