Dies at Age 87
Longtime Sitka resident Norman Richard Nelson died Tuesday at his home. He was 87.

Plans NRA Classes
Sitka Sportsman’s Association is seeking community input concerning offering four possible National Rifle Association certified courses.
They include:
–Home Firearms Safety course, a 4 hour non-shooting course teaching safe gun handling;
–Basic Pistol course, about 8-10 hours;
–Basic Rifle course, approx. 8-10 hours; and
–Basic Personal Protection in the Home, which is about 16 hours.
Courses are basic, informative and set in a relaxed environment, SSA said.They are taught by an NRA certified instructor.
SSA hopes to determine, by the responses, which courses to begin with. Individuals can indicate the course that appeals to them the most by email at sitkasportsmans@yahoo.com or text (907) 738-4559.
Master Gardener
Class is Offered
University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension will offer a Southeast Alaska Master Gardener ‘‘Hybrid’’ class Feb. 21-May 9.
It is open to experienced Southeast Alaska growers desiring to learn more and share with others through a variety of service opportunities.
The online class will be 6-8:30 p.m. Mondays Feb. 21-May 9, plus two Saturdays.
Topics will be related to designing, developing and maintaining gardens and other growing environments Southeast Alaska.
Registration fees are $300 that includes $150 which will be refunded when 40 hours of volunteer service are completed within a year. Scholarships may be available upon request. The service goal is to share gardening skills and knowledge through educational community projects. Fee includes an electronic version of the Alaska Master Gardener Manual. Business Meeting
Ocean Wave Quilters will hold a short business meeting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

Music Festival
Concerts Staged
Sitka Music Festival will offer two concerts featuring Zuill Bailey, cellist and SMF artistic director, and Alfredo Oyaguez, pianist.
Concerts will be held 6 p.m. Feb. 26 and 4 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Miner Music Center at Stevenson Hall on the SJ Campus. Tickets at $30 are limited and can be purchased at sitkamusicfestival.org.
