The Sitka Pioneers Home Auxiliary will meet 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Pioneers Home Chapel.
The auxiliary is a non-profit that assists in furthering the well-being of the residents of the Pioneers Home.

Speaks on Proposed
Education Cuts
Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins will speak about proposed cuts to education funding at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at the Sitka High School library. It is open to the public.
Sitkans will have the opportunity to learn more details about the 25 percent reduction in school funding in the governor’s proposed budget, to voice concerns, and to show support for public schools in Alaska.

Benefit Dinner for
SHS Basketball
The Sitka High School boys basketball team will hold a fundraising dinner 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Elks Lodge 1662.
Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and will include hamburgers and fries for $16 per person. A dessert auction is planned.
The SHS players and coaches will provide game show-style entertainment starting at 6 p.m.

Two Martial Arts
Seminars at HamesHames Center Martial Arts will offer a pair of seminars by Jordan Tabb of Ketchikan on Saturday, Feb. 23.
A women’s self-defense seminar will be offered 10:30 a.m.-noon. Attendees will apply Brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques and concepts to real-life self-defense situations to defend against bigger, stronger attackers. It is for ages 14 and older. No prior experience is necessary.
The cost is $35. Due to Hames Wellness Fund support, all proceeds will go to the Sitkans Against Family Violence shelter. A beginner-to-intermediate Brazilian jiu-jitsu seminar will be at 1 p.m. for ages 14 and older. Fundamental jiu-jitsu techniques, and advanced concepts, will be covered. No prior experience is necessary. The cost is $50.
Guest instructor Jordan Tabb is a black belt and the owner and instructor at Ketchikan Jiu-Jitsu. Register at Hames Center or call 747-5080.
Chamber to Meet
Trevor Bradford of Evergreen Business Capital will speak at the Chamber of Commerce noon Feb. 20 luncheon at Westmark Sitka.
School Board at
Public Meeting
Members of the Sitka School Board will attend a public meeting hosted by school district staff 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Sitka High School library.
The event will be a question-and-answer session with state Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins.
Title I Parent
Meeting Feb. 20
The Title 1 parent meeting will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School conference room.
It will address Title 1A requirements, how students are assessed and ideas for parent involvement. All are invited to attend. Call 747-8395 with questions.
Testimony Taken
On Senate Bills
The Senate State Affairs Committee will take public testimony on Senate Bills 33 and 34 regarding arrest, release, sentencing, probation and parole, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Sitka Legislative Information Office.

Alaska Day Festival
Planners to Meet
Coordinators for Sitka’s mid-October community Alaska Day Festival will meet 6:30 p.m. tonight at Centennial Hall to continue planning activities commemorating the official transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States of America at Sitka on Oct. 18, 1867.
On the agenda is selecting a secondary focus for 2019 chosen among an institution, historic event, or cultural tradition important in Sitka’s heritage.
The Alaska Day Committee will meet each third Tuesday of the month. Persons having comments about festival activities or new volunteers can attend the meetings or contact or Vice Chair Steve Dalquist at 752-0750.
Health Networking
Lunch on Friday
The Sitka Health Summit Coalition’s monthly networking and learning lunch is noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Sitka Community Hospital classroom.

Bike Group Meets
Sitka Bicycle Friendly Community Coalition will meet 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Sitka Public Library.
The meeting is open to members of the public interested in promoting safe cycling. Agenda items include 2019 goals, the Sitka Cycling Club membership drive and the new bicycle benefits program.

Story Time Set
‘‘Fruit Salad’’ is the theme of the 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, story time program at Sitka Public Library. ‘‘Ambrosia,’’ by Dan Manalang, will be one of the readings. For information on the preschool program call the library at 747-8708.
Rhymes, songs and a craft project will be part of the program.
Be-Tweens Invited
Be-Tweens, ages 11 to 13 years, are invited to a ‘‘Death by Chocolate’’ program 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Sitka Public Library.
Participants will test their physical skills at chocolate musical chairs and other chocolate-theme challenges. The event is free and registration is required. For information call the library at 747-8708.
Babies and Books
Party Saturday
Sitka Babies and Books will celebrate its annual event with a party at Sitka Public Library.
“Ten Tiny Babies” will be the book featured 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.
The event will focus on the five practices of early literacy – read, play, write, sing and talk. It will include readings, games and activities. Every child registered will get a free board book.

Affordable Housing
Fair on Saturday
The Sitka Affordable Housing Fair will be 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Centennial Hall. It is open to the public.
Attendees can see one-, two- and three-bedroom home plans and prices of homes to be built in the Halibut Point Cottages neighborhood being developed by Sitka Community Land Trust.
Sitka CLT will have home buyer applications and lenders will be available for individuals to learn more about qualifying for a mortgage. The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, USDA Rural Development and Sitka tribe of Alaska will be available to discuss other affordable housing options.
ANB, ANS Set
Joint Meeting
Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 and Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will hold a joint meeting 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the ANB Hall. All are invited to attend.
