Group Bike Ride
Set for Sunday
The Sitka Cycling Club’s monthly group ride will be noon Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Salty Spoke bike co-op, which is accessed by riding to the back of the Hames Center.
The ride will consist of a one-hour Cross Trail excursion and end at a bike-friendly business downtown. All helmeted cyclists are welcome to join. For information or to sign up for the club’s newsletter go to sitkacycling.wordpress.com.
Chowder, Bake
Sale Saturday
Clam chowder, fish chowder and bake sale items will be for sale 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at St. Michael’s Cathedral in the basement.
Donations of ingredients or baked goods are being accepted by contacting Marie at 738-4166.
Homeless Panel
Seeks Members
The Sitka Homeless Coalition is looking to expand the number of seats on its board of directors panel.
‘‘With increasing community support and a growing number of projects underway, the coalition would like to encourage more Sitkans to become directly involved in guiding the nonprofit group forward,’’ a press release from the group said.
SHC meets the last Thursday of the month, 6:30 p.m., at the Sitka Public Library.
The time commitment is four to six hours a month. Call 747-7978 for an application and information. The deadline is Feb. 29.

Meeting Feb. 27
The Sitka Homeless Coalition will hold its monthly meeting 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Gus Adams Room at the Sitka Public Library.

Bridge to College
Resource on Tap
UAS-Sitka Campus has a new resource for students who want to study online or be ‘‘college ready’’ in 2020.
The Alaskan Bridge to College aims to assist people planning to start or restart a degree, high school juniors and seniors, and students who are already enrolled at college but want to improve their study skills.
The Alaskan Bridge to College course is free, available at any time online, and designed to help Alaskans build college success skills at their own pace. There are more than 19 college success skill areas to choose from including: time management, study habits, what to expect in online learning, writing for college success, creating balance (stress management), and financial aid options.

Affordable Housing
Fair on March 7
The Sitka Community Land Trust will hold an Affordable Housing Fair 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Centennial Hall.
Attendees can have snacks and see house plans for one- two- and three-bedroom homes, and a time-lapse construction video of the new house. Lenders will be on hand to discuss down payment assistance and other programs. For information, call Mim at 738-2888.
Professional Vocalist
At Lutheran Church
Sitka Lutheran Church will host professional vocalist Stephanie Johnson, Tacoma, Washington, on Sunday.
Johnson will lead singing at Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m. and a separate program for teens at Youth Group Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Both are free and include food. The public is invited.
Monthly Grind
Future Discussed
The Sitka Monthly Grind and its future will be discussed 2 p.m. on Feb. 29, at the Sitka Public Library.
The communitywide meeting to decide if the Sitka Monthly Grind will continue after April is being held to pull enough community members together as a steering committee/producers.
The Sitka Monthly Grind needs several people who will commit to helping with running the sound, help move the equipment back and forth, help produce, and the other tasks needed for 2021 and beyond. Organizers said the commitment is for up to six shows, usually October through April, a monthly meeting that is under an hour, some “homework” arranging the acts, and publicity.
The day of the show – usually one Saturday a month – is long, 1:30 to 9:30 p.m., and occasionally longer, Grind producers said.

Meet at Keet
Keet Gooshi Heen will have parent-teacher conferences the week of Feb. 24. No school will be on Feb. 27 and 28 during conferences.
Parents should contact their child’s teacher to set up a time to meet.
School District
Makes Survey
Sitka School District families are being reminded to watch for an email with a link to the Family School Climate and Connectedness Survey.
Survey results will help the district improve communication and connections for students and families. Last year’s results are at www.sitkaschools.org. The survey also may be taken at parent-teacher conferences.
Winter Film Series
At National Park
Sitka National Historical Park will continue its winter film series featuring films from national park units through March. Films run about 30 minutes and are shown at 1 p.m. at the park visitor center.
The schedule for the next few weeks is as follows:
–Saturday, Feb. 15: ‘‘Beloved Island from Roosevelt Campobello International Park in New Brunswick, Canada.’’
The international park preserves the summer home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt on the southern tip of Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada located across the international border from Lubec, Maine. As one of only a few international sites in the NPS system, it is jointly administered, staffed, and funded by the peoples of Canada and the United States. The 4.25 square mile area includes an indoor museum and an outdoor nature park.
–Saturday, Feb. 22: ‘‘Teedie from Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York.’’
The site preserves the reconstructed house that was the boyhood home of a man who was a rancher, naturalist, explorer, author, a colonel in the Rough Riders, and the 26th president of the United States. The film presents gives viewers an opportunity to learn about places and events in his youth that played a role in making him the person in history books.
–Feb. 29: ‘‘William Howard Taft: Public Servant from William Howard Taft National Historic Site in Ohio.’’
Taft NHS preserves the childhood home of the president who designated this park as a national monument in 1910. The film tells of the experiences, values, and personal characteristics that led to a long career in public service, including terms as chief justice of the Supreme Court and president of the United States.

4-H Climbing
Club on Tap
Registration is still open for 4-H Climbing Club for grades 6-12.
The series includes knot tying skills, belaying and climbing techniques, and risk management. This is an intro level course to the basic tools needed to rock climb indoors and out using a top rope.
Part I is Friday, Feb. 7, 21 and 28. Part ll is Friday, March 13, 20 and 27.

Joint Meeting
