In Oscar Series
The Sitka Film Society and Coliseum Theater will present the 2023 Oscars Film Festival Feb. 25 through March 2 at the Coliseum.
The films are “The Fabelmans,” “Argentina, 1985,” and five short documentaries over two nights.
‘‘The Fabelmans’’ – 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Part memoir, part ode to the power of the movies, ‘‘The Fabelmans’’ finds Steven Spielberg digging at the family roots that helped make him a beloved filmmaker – and proves he hasn’t lost his magic touch. PG-13. Nominated for best picture, director, screenplay, actress.
‘‘Argentina, 1985’’ – 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26. A team of lawyers takes on the heads of Argentina’s bloody military dictatorship during the 1980s in a battle against odds and a race against time. Rated R. Nominated for best international feature film.

Short Docs Part 1 (three films) 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27:
1. ‘‘How Do You Measure a Year?’’ – USA, 29 min. In a mere 29 minutes we see a girl go from a toddler to a young woman with all the beautiful and awkward stages in between while the father/daughter relationship evolves in all its complexities.
2. ‘‘The Elephant Whisperers’’ – India, 40 min. Bomman and Bellie, a couple in south India, devote their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, forging a family like no other.
3. ‘‘Stranger at the Gate’’ – USA, 19 min. A U.S. Marine plots a terrorist attack on a small-town American mosque. His plan takes an unexpected turn when he comes face-to-face with the people he sets out to kill.
Short Docs, Part 2 (two films) – 5 p.m. Thursday, March 2:
4. ‘‘Haulout’’ – UK, 25 min. A man is waiting in his hut in the desolate expanse of the Russian Arctic. He is holding out in order to observe a natural event that occurs there, every year. But ocean warming is taking its toll.
5. ‘‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’’ – USA, 40 min. Glamor, secrets, a White House on the brink of collapse. She was once as famous as Jackie O, but then she tried to take down a president.

Survey on Tap
The Sitka School District is asking parents and caregivers to complete the School Climate and Connectedness Survey, which was sent to families via email and remind notices.
Survey results help the district identify gaps and strengthen our partnerships with families.
Unitarians Gather
Denton Pearson on Sunday, Feb. 26, will present a program at the Sitka Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship in observance of Presidents Day.
His subjects will be the first Unitarian occupants of the White House: John and Abigail Adams.
All are welcome to attend. Gathering is at 10:30 a.m., and the program begins at 10:45. Bread and soup follow the program at noon.
The Fellowship Hall is at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind, off Spruce Street.
Applications Sought
For Honors Institute
The Rural Alaska Honors Institute is accepting applications for its summer session, May 30-July 14.
Applications are due March 1.
RAHI is a free six-week college exploration program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is open to Alaska Native and rural students with at least a 3.0 GPA following the completion of their junior or senior year of high school.
The program aims to help students thrive academically by exposing them to life on campus, enhancing their self-confidence and discipline, and helping them develop a statewide community of peers and mentors.

Electrification Expo
In Sitka March 18
Transition Sitka’s free Electrification Expo is scheduled 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 18 at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
All are invited to learn about weatherizing their home, heat pumps and financing, electric cars, E-bikes, how to take advantage of tax credits, and more.
Those attending will hear how to save money, see demonstrations, and learn how to reduce carbon emissions. Refreshments will be provided.

Scrappy Cooking
Workshop on Tap
The workshop ‘‘Scrappy Cooking 101’’ will be offered 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, through the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Participants will learn how to make vegetable stock, bone/fish broth, and pectin. Jennifer Nu from Ecotrust and the Southeast Sustainable Partnership will be instructor for the event at the Sitka Lutheran Church kitchen.
Nu will lead a focused discussion on what happens to food waste in Sitka, how to start composting, and tips and tricks for reducing food waste.

SCT Calls for
Builders, Painters
GSAC Sitka Community Theater is calling for volunteers for help build and paint a set for the upcoming production of “Amelie.” The next volunteer call is for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Performing Arts Center.
Coordinators advise volunteers to wear clothes suitable for painting, and bring work gloves if you have them. Use the PAC performer entrance, behind Sitka High School, where the school meets the PAC. Those with questions can call 907-738-0602.
‘Understanding Death’
Retreat for Youths Set
Brave Heart Volunteers is offering a retreat “Exploring Death, Loss, and Hope” for high school students, to help them understand death and loss as part of life.
The program is designed to provide uplifting educational information, art activities for self-expression, impart hope, promote a safe space to share and support each other, and foster positive coping methods youths can use for the rest of their lives, BHV said. The series is not counseling or therapy, and there is no fee.
Saturday, March 25, begins with an overview of the series for adults and a discussion on how to help youths cope with death and loss, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The retreat for teens is 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 25.
