Filings for Assembly, School Board Slow

With just three days to go before the deadline, only two have filed so far for the Assembly and School Board seats open in the Oct. 5 city election.

But city clerk Sara Peterson said it’s not unusual to see filings slow to start, with a big uptick the day of the deadline.

“I’ve seen it like this in the past,” she said.

Open are two positions on the Assembly and two on the School Board. The terms of Kevin Mosher and Valorie Nelson on the Assembly, and Amy Morrison and Eric Van Cise on the School Board, expire this fall.

So far, Mosher has filed for Assembly and Morrison for School Board. Both Nelson and Van Cise said they don’t plan to run again.

The deadline to file is 5 p.m. Friday Aug. 6.

“I haven’t had a lot of interest,” Peterson added. “There’s been a few packets picked up.”

Those filing for Assembly must be qualified Sitka voters and have resided continuously in the municipality during the 12 months immediately before the election in order to run. Candidates for School Board must be qualified Sitka voters in the municipality for 30 days immediately before the election.

Those interested in filing are asked to contact the city clerk at 747-1811 or 747-1826 to schedule an appointment to pick up the packet and receive instructions.

An advisory question also may be on the ballot related to the sale of the old Sitka Community Hospital buildings and properties, owned by the city. An ordinance on the advisory question passed the Assembly on first reading and will be up for a final reading at the Aug. 10 meeting.
