Five fishermen escaped into a skiff as their boat sank Sunday morning near Mary Island, 25 miles southeast of Ketchikan, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard Air Station Sitka was notified at 11:40 a.m. that help was needed after the 49-foot F/V Daffnie had sunk, and all five crew had disembarked into the Daffnie’s skiff. A helicopter launched at 12:03 p.m.
A small boat crew from Station Ketchikan arrived on scene first, and transferred four of the crew into the Coast Guard vessel for a ride into town. The skipper of the Daffnie stayed aboard his skiff to recover the net, and made it safely into Bar Harbor, the Coast Guard said.
The helicopter returned to Sitka, since further help was not needed, a spokesman said.
The cause of the sinking was not known.
