The Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery opened again today at 11 a.m. on the south side of the sound in an area extending from Aleutkina and Deep Inlet to Redoubt Bay.
The Redoubt-Kanga Bay area was open for fishing Monday as well, along with an area just off downtown Sitka extending from the O’Connell Bridge to Indian River.
Monday’s harvest numbers were not available today, but the Department of Fish and Game reported a total catch through Sunday of 14,300 tons of herring out of the guideline harvest level of 45,164 tons.
Herring spawn on beaches continued Monday as well, along with the traditional Sitka area subsistence harvest of spawn on branches.
A Fish and Game aerial survey on Monday noted active spawn along the Sitka road network, on Krestof Island, Kruzof Island and the Magoun Islands. Waters off of Halibut Point Road turned light blue during spawning on Monday.
All told, Fish and Game has tallied 45.5 miles of spawn this year in the Sitka Sound management area.
