Herring Still Not Up to Par

Posted

By Sentinel Staff

Schools of herring were spotted again between Middle Island and Bieli Rock, as well as in Eastern Channel and Deep Inlet, but test sets conducted by the Department of Fish and Game again failed to locate marketable fish Thursday in the Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery.

The department conducted four test sets Thursday afternoon, but none contained herring with over 10 percent mature roe, which is the quality threshold for a commercial opener. Three of the four sets, two at Inner Point and one at Fred’s Creek, pulled up fish with just over 9 percent mature roe, ADFG said in a press release.
