Celebration of Life
Planned for Spring
After years of being treasured by those who knew her, Lorraine Rude Thompson passed peacefully with family by her side on Jan. 6, 2020. She was born on Jan. 24, 1923.
A small, graveside service was held in Petersburg on Jan. 9. A celebration of life will be held in the spring.

Chamber to Meet
Andrew Friske, residential principal at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, will speak at the Chamber of Commerce noon Wednesday luncheon at Westmark Sitka.
Friske will present information on the upcoming Mt. Edgecumbe Invitational Basketball Tournament, in its 14th year at the BJ McGillis gym.
Republicans Get
Call to Convention
District 35 Republicans will hold its convention 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Centennial Hall in Room 5.
Business to be conducted includes: election of officers, proposed resolutions or platform changes, and election of delegates to the state Republican convention in April.
Those who wish to attend are being encouraged to go to the ARP website, www.alaskagop.net, to register and pay the $20 fee. Otherwise, the registration fee is payable at the door. Participants need to have been registered Republicans for at least 90 days prior to the district convention. Those elected to attend the state Republican convention, April 2-4 in Juneau, are to be prepared to pay the state convention fee immediately, organizers said.
A toll-free number will be provided for District 35 residents outside of Sitka to call in to the convention. Communities in District 35 include: Petersburg, Hoonah, Kake, Angoon, Pelican, Tenakee Springs, Craig, Klawock, Coffman Cove and Thorne Bay.

Meets Wednesday
Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. Questions can be directed to Anne Davis at 747-3207.

Items with green tags are on sale at half price in both Sitka White Elephant Shop stores this week.
The shop is open 6-8 p.m. Mondays, and noon-3 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays.
Float Replacement
Project Notice for
Crescent Harbor
Because of construction planned for Crescent Harbor Ramp 3 in the coming week, pedestrian traffic routes along the nearby Sea Walk and access to floats 5, 6 and 7 will be impacted Jan. 12 through approximately Jan. 18.
The parking lot across from 709 Lincoln Street will be closed, the city said in a press release.
Turnagain Marine Contractors will post traffic control signs at critical areas along the Sea Walk and at the entrance to the Crescent Harbor ramps and the parking lot.
TMC is in the process of demolishing Crescent Harbor floats 1 through 4 ahead of replacement of the floats, harbor walkways and gangways. Electrical and water services also will be replaced. TMC expects float installation to be complete in March, with electrical and utility work to follow.
Other parking and pedestrian access changes will be needed over the course of the project, the press release said. Those changes will be posted on the city web site at https://www.cityofsitka.com/, on its Facebook page, and shared with local media outlets.

Stuffed Animals
Sleep Over at Library
Sitka Babies and Books invites children 0 to 5 years to take their second-favorite stuffed animal to Sitka Public Library to participate in a sleepover.
The stuffed animals can be dropped off on Friday, Jan. 24, anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Super-secret cameras will catch them as they check out all the fun things to do at the library.
Participants will pick up their friends on the next day, Saturday, Jan. 25, at 10:30 a.m. and share a ‘‘Teddy Bear’’ story time with Jackie DeGinnaro.

For Foods Panel
The Sitka Local Foods Network will hold an open house for potential board members and volunteers 6-7:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Sitka Public Library, Gus Adams Meeting Room.
Those planning to attend are reminded of the time change from what was originally announced.
All are being asked to consider joining the board of directors, or volunteer, for the organization to help pursue its mission to increase the amount of locally produced and harvested food in the diets of Southeast Alaskans.

‘Read Harder’
Challenge Listed
Sitka Public Library is offering teens and adults printed lists to participate in the Read Harder Challenge, an annual reading journey organized by Book Riot.
The 24 tasks are designed to help readers break out of their reading bubble and expand their worldview through books. With new genres, new authors, and new points of view, the challenge offers a way to discover excellent books that they wouldn’t have otherwise picked up, the library said.
The challenge begins this month, but participants can jump in at any time. Those who complete the list by Dec. 31 are being asked to take a photo and e-mail it to readharder@bootriot.com to get 30% off one order at Out of Print, the library said.

Fiddle Grind
Staged Jan. 18
The Sitka Monthly Grind’s annual Fiddle Grind is slated Jan. 18 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. Doors open 6:30 p.m. and the show is at 7 p.m.
Ticket are $5; ages 5 and younger are admitted free. Attendees are asked to take a plate of homemade desserts to share and a cup for coffee or tea. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books.
The Monthly Grind philosophy is family-oriented, affordable, and non-political.

Drill Conductor
Training in Sitka
The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor class 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 30 at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.
The cost is $52.50 for commercial fishermen and $183.75 for all others. Mariners may register online at www.amsea.org or call 747-3287.
Instructor Jerry Dzugan will cover: cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, signal flares, and mayday calls; man-overboard recovery; firefighting; flooding and damage control; dewatering pumps, immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills.
