To Give Students
Food Lessons
Sitka School District students this week will get performance cooking demonstrations led by Alaskan chefs Matt Little Dog of the Varsity Grill, Anchorage, and Randy Rice of the Juneau School District.
The event will feature authentic Korean ramen. Demonstrations will be lunch service at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School and Blatchley Middle School on Jan. 15, and Sitka High School on Jan. 16.
As the food service provider for Juneau and Sitka school districts, NMS is seeking ways to encourage students to try healthy new food options. As they prepare the meal in full view of students, both chefs will engage students with their personal career paths while providing them with the nutritional benefits of the food.
The Korean ramen will be presented with a variety of proteins and toppings including Korean kimchee, nori, kale, hard-boiled eggs, pickled ginger, pickled radishes and a variety of sauces.

Weekly Rehearsals
Community Orchestra rehearsals are 10:45-12:15 Saturdays at the Blatchley Middle School music room. All instruments are welcome. Contact Sarah Frank at (303) 949-2933.
Tryouts Friday
For Barracudas
The Baranof Barracuda Swim Club will hold team tryouts 3-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Blatchley Pool.
Swimmers should be prepared to swim two lengths of the pool, one length freestyle (crawl) with face in the water, and one length backstroke.
Swimmers ages 5 and older are welcome to tryout. Coaches will evaluate swimmers’ ability levels and inform swimmers and parents at the end of the tryout which group and time will be appropriate for each athlete.

Alaska Day
Planners Meet
Coordinators for Sitka’s 2019 mid-October community Alaska Day Festival will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Centennial Hall.
On the agenda are election of trustees/officers and proposals for 2019 activities commemorating the official transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States of America which occurred at Sitka on October 18, 1867. For 2019, a secondary focus will be chosen among an institution, historic event, or cultural tradition important in Sitka’s heritage.
The Alaska Day Committee will meet each following third Tuesday of the month. Persons having comments about festival activities or new volunteers can attend the meetings or contact Chairman Ted Allio at 747-5124 or Vice Chair Steve Dalquist at 752-0750.

The ‘‘Indian Cooking With Mohan Raj Arul’’ class scheduled Tuesday has been postponed.

Chamber to Meet
Alaska Dream Cruises Manager Zide Allen and Zakary Kirkpatrick, marketing director, will speak at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.
They will give updates on Alaskan Dream Cruises. The public is invited and lunch is available.
