Fundraiser on Tap
The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will present a history and dessert fundraiser, “1920: Murder in Chatham Strait,” by Betsy Longenbaugh and Ed Schoenfeld, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Centennial Hall.
Tickets, $35, include a dessert by Wild Flour Bakery. Tickets are available at sitkamaritime.org and at Old Harbor Books.
The historic presentation sheds light on the world, and underworld, of prohibition-era maritime Alaska. Longenbaugh, formerly of Sitka and a retired newspaper reporter, is author of “Forgotten Murders from Alaska” from Epicenter Press. The maritime murder covered in the program took place about 40 miles east of Sitka.
AFS Seeking
New Families
The Sitka AFS high school exchange program is seeking four Sitka families to host a student for the next school year.
Hosted students this year are from Latvia, Morocco, Cameroon and Bosnia/Herzegovina.
Local training and support are available for hosting a student.

Chinese New Year
Program On Tap
Sitka Babies and Books invites families of children ages birth to 4 years to a celebration of the Chinese New Year 10:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Sitka Public Library.
Children, parents and caregivers are welcome to enjoy a morning of readings and activities. Registration is required to receive a copy of a free book about the program’s theme.
Books are purchased with a grant from Sitka Legacy Foundation, an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation.

‘Into the White’
Film to Show
A free showing of the Norwegian film “Into the White” will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 408 Marine Street.
Set during World War II, the film is based on the true story of German and British pilots who crash in the mountains of Norway in the winter. In order to survive, they must set aside the rules of war.
It is open to the public.
Keet Family
Night Thursday
Keet Gooshi Heen families are invited to a family night event 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19.
A meal of pancit, vegetable spring rolls and fruit will be served. The night will include art activities, an open gym, American sign language, math and board games, Legos, ping-pong and strawberry-dipping.

Baranof Students
Invited to Event
Kindergartners and first-graders are invited to attend a free after-school Good News Club after school until 3:30 p.m. Thursdays Jan. 26-April 13 at the school.
Activities will include games, crafts, puppet Bible stories, and other activities.

Harp Sing Set
All are invited to learn to sing four-part a capella harmony in the Sacred Harp (shape note) tradition 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Pioneers Home chapel.
Beginners and listeners are welcome. Singing is from the red Denson and Christmas books. Loaner books are available. Masks are optional. For information call Sara at 747-2915.

The Sitka School Board will hold a budget work session 6 p.m. tonight at the Sitka School District district office. No action will be taken.

Combined Meeting
A combined meeting of Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 and Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 is scheduled 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26 .at the ANB Founders Hall on Katlian Street.
Planning for Elizabeth Peratrovich Day activities on Feb. 16 is on the agenda. All members are being encouraged to attend and to take a friend. The meeting is open to the public.
ANS to Meet
Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will gather for a regular business meeting 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Swan Lake Terrace senior housing at 414 Hollywood Way.
