UAS Chancellor
To Visit Towns
The University of Alaska Southeast Chancellor Search Committee has recommended five candidates to meet with the UAS and Southeast communities in the final phase of the review process.
The five are Cathy LeCompte, M.N.P.L., division director of the Alaska Vocational Technical Center; Joe Nelson, J.D., chairman of the Sealaska Board of Directors; Aparna Palmer, Ph.D., vice president of Front Range Community College; Lisa Parady, J.D., Ed.D., executive director of the Alaska Council of School Administrators; and James Taylor, Ed.D., senior associate vice president of Utah State University.
The current UAS chancellor, Karen Carey, is retiring at the end of the school year.
Between January 23 and February 9, the five candidates will visit the Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan campuses and meet with UAS students, faculty, staff, administrators, deans, and directors.
The candidates also will have one-on-one sessions with UA President Pat Pitney.
Community forums and presentations are planned, and all are encouraged to join meetings, UAS said in a news release.
The first candidate forum in Sitka will be with Parady, on Thursday, Jan. 26. Taylor will be here Jan. 31; Aparna on Feb. 2; LeCompte on Feb. 7; and Nelson on Feb. 9.
The forums will be recorded and posted to the website for anyone not able to attend the live sessions.

‘Blind Date’ Book
Event at Library
Blind Date with a Book is in full swing at Sitka Public Library.
Gift-wrapped books will be on display throughout the month of February. The first sentence will be written on the wrapping, along with clues about the story inside. Patrons can choose a book, check it out, unwrap and read it.

Month Noted
February is Library Lovers Month, and tweens and teens are invited to try a ‘‘Love at First Line’’ book from a display of specially wrapped books at Sitka Public Library.
Readers can check them out, and then unwrap and read them at home.
‘‘Hopefully they’ll find love at first line,’’ the library said. ‘‘If they do, and share it with the librarians, they can enter a heart in a random raffle and the lucky winner gets a sweet prize.’’

Baranof Island Housing Authority’s monthly board of commissioners meeting will be held 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Adult Spelling
Bee Set Feb. 9
The Friends of the Library and the Sitka Public Library are holding an Adult Spelling Bee 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at Centennial Hall as a fundraiser for Sitka Public Library.
The public is invited and can purchase tickets at Old Harbor Books or the door for the suggested donation of $5.
A team consists of one or two people, with one needing to be over 18 years old. There is still room for spellers. The entry fee is $20 per person. Those with questions can email jbudd3500@gmail.com or call (907) 747-4821.

Quilters Meet
Ocean Wave Quilters will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at United Methodist Church.

St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church will hold one service, at 10 a.m., on Jan. 22, in person and with a Zoom option.

‘Do Good Deeds’
Sitka Public Library invites youths 12 and younger to participate in its Countdown to Valentine’s Day: 14 Days of Kindness program.
To participate, youths can pick up an activity sheet at the library, complete one of the suggested good deeds a day starting on Feb. 1, and return the completed sheet to the library on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to receive a sweet surprise of appreciation.

ComFish Kodiak
Is Gearing Up
Kodiak is gearing up for hundreds of visitors to attend its 44th annual ComFish Alaska Expo and Fisheries Forums 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 16-18.
ComFish provides an opportunity for people to bring their goods and services directly to where people in the fishing industry live and work. It is also a one-stop shop for stakeholders to get the latest information about seafood industry issues.

On Honor Roll
Hunter Johnson and Jordan Kuhnert of Sitka have been named to the Spokane Community College honor roll for fall quarter. The honor roll lists those students who achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
SCC is one of two community colleges within the Community Colleges of Spokane, Washington, district.
Certification in
Pesticides Offered
Two three-day certified pesticide applicator training courses will be taught Jan. 31-Feb. 2 and April 25-27. The University Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will teach the classes via Zoom. Each will meet 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and will be available statewide.
The state of Alaska requires certification for anyone who purchases, uses or sells restricted-use pesticides. Anyone who acts as a pesticide consultant, engages in the commercial or contract use of pesticides, or supervises pesticide use at a public location also must be certified.
A $75 fee includes study materials. Register for each course at http://bit.ly/PSEPtraining. Participants are being encouraged to become familiar with the materials and required math beforehand.
Materials will be mailed. The deadline to register for the January class is Jan. 24. The deadline for the April class is April 18.
