Park to Reopen

Visitor Center

Sitka National Historical Park will reopen its visitor center Friday following completion of a major concrete floor project.

The floor project is intended to restore the original look and feel to the historic “Mission 66”-style visitor center. The National Park Service’s “Mission 66” initiative-built park facilities around the country are being done to encourage park visitation as part of celebrating the NPS’s 50th Anniversary.  Sitka’s visitor center was one of these facilities.

Starting Friday, Jan. 29, the park visitor center hours will be noon-4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, except holidays, for the rest of the winter.

Films will be shown twice each day at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Jr. Ranger books and badges will be available.

Attendees are reminded to maintain social distance and wear a mask while in the facility. Rules are subject to further guidance from the Secretary of Interior.

Beached bird training is slated 1-4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, via Zoom.

To sign up, and for further information, go to coasst.org/join-our-team/trainings-events/.

Training is by the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team.

The three-hour virtual training teaches participants how to collect data on beach-cast carcasses of marine birds on a monthly basis to establish the baseline pattern of bird mortality on North Pacific beaches. Data collected helps address marine conservation issues and protect marine resources, COASST said in a press release.
