SAIL Grant

Challenge On

Southeast Alaska Independent Living’s $2,500 challenge grant with First Bank ends Jan. 31.

SAIL helps students build skills for success, help elders remain independent and healthy at home, and help Sitkans with disabilities gain confidence and camaraderie with outdoor programming likes hikes, kayaking and sledding, a press release from SAIL said.

Donations directly benefit SAIL’s work in Sitka, and will be doubled with a First Bank match.

Individuals can stop by the SAIL office, 514 Lake Street, or go to the display at First Bank, 203 Lake Street, to donate.

Parkinson Support

Group Organizes

An introductory meeting for people with Parkinsons, their caregivers, or other family members and friends who wish to attend, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Centennial Hall in the Sockeye Room.

‘‘This disease has many facets and symptoms. It is through supporting each other that we can provide positive emotional support which is so vital to our lives,’’ organizers of the group said.

‘‘There may not currently be a ‘cure’ for this disease but there are many ways to live a full life as we fight back and keep moving forward. Within this group we hope to share some of these positive and helpful things to do as well as learn about new findings on the medical horizon,’’ the press release said.

The meeting will be a get-together to see if there is enough interest to start a group. It will have support and information from the American Parkinson Disease Association  NW chapter. Its website is www.apdaparkinson.org/community/northwest.

Those with questions, or who can help at the meeting, are asked to contact Marjorie at 747-3461 or text to 738-3078.
