Volunteers Sought

For City Boards

Volunteer positions are available on several municipal boards and commissions. 

Currently available are: Animal Hearing Board (category specific seats), Building Department Appeals Board, Climate Action Task Force, Investment Committee, Library Commission, Police and Fire Commission, and Tree and Landscape Committee.

Auditions for Play

‘Maskerade’ Set

GSAC Sitka Community Theater is holding auditions starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at Yaw Chapel for its spring production “Maskerade,” directed by Sotera Perez.

The play is an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s bestselling fantasy comic novel from the Discworld series. In the story, two witches travel to an opera house to find their friend, and get caught up in a story similar to The Phantom of the Opera.

No experience needed. Actors auditioning are asked to prepare a one- to two-minute comic monologue and be ready to do a short cold reading. Masks and proof of vaccination are required.

The show is to be March 25-27 at the Performing Arts Center. Rehearsals are Sundays, with other days based on actors’ schedules.

 

St. Peter’s Notes

Service Changes

St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church is implementing a temporary pause to all in-person church services due to the current COVID-19 spike.

No in-person services will be held on Sundays or Wednesdays, Jan. 5 through Jan. 16. Services will continue to be held via Zoom noon Wednesdays and 10 a.m. Sundays.

Child Care Training

Grants Available

Sitka Tribe of Alaska can provide financial assistance to community members who are wanting to become a licensed child care provider.

Covered services include: license and application fees; background checks for household members; required safety items; educational supplies and equipment; CPR/first aid training fees; and provider training fees.

To get started on the licensing process, contact Jean Swanson at 747-3968 or jean.swanson@sitkatribe-nsn.gov. Funding is through the Child Care and Development Fund Grant Award and Sitka Tribe of Alaska.

 

 

Women’s Book

Group to Meet

The Women’s Book Group will hold a Zoom meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, to discuss ‘‘Becoming Myself: A Memoir’’ by Nancy Ricketts and ‘‘Hold the Tide’’ by Linnea Lentfer.

For Dance Group

Two recruitment nights are planned Jan. 24 and 31 for women 18 years and older who wish to join the New Archangel Dancers.

The all-women volunteer group includes involvement in dancing and performing, community events, tourism and a sense of community.

Water Plant

Construction On

Construction on the city’s critical secondary water plant intake in the Gary Paxton Industrial Park area will continue through Feb. 28.

Construction activities include rock excavation, blasting and heavy machinery and trucking access. To safely construct the new intake structure, public access to Sawmill Creek in the Gary Paxton Industrial Park area upstream of the ADOT bridge will be closed through Feb. 28.

‘‘Please avoid the area and obey all project signage,’’ the city said.

Homeless Coalition

Photo Shoot Slated

The Sitka Homeless Coalition’s donor appreciation photo will be taken noon-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the UAS-Sitka Campus parking lot. 

Everyone who donated to the group’s Shelter for All in Sitka fundraising campaign can join the short outdoor event.

The gathering is to celebrate the successful fundraising campaign and to have a photo to show potential project supporters that Sitka is committed to ending homelessness, organizers said.

Participants are being encouraged to wear masks. The event theme colors are red and black. For information or to donate to the campaign go to https://sheltersitka.org/.
