Unitarians Gather
For Epiphany
Rich McClear will speak on the celebration of the Epiphany season at Sitka’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday.
‘‘Everyone has heard of the 12 days of Christmas,’’ program organizers said. ‘‘In the early church, Christmas lasted for 40 days. But that was too much even for the heartiest Christmas revelers so Christmas split into two seasons, Christmas with its 12 days and Epiphany, which, depending on which church, can carry through to Lent.’’
This Sunday is the first Sunday in Epiphany. It celebrates the arrival of the Three Kings at the manger, the fellowship said.
Gathering begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45 a.m. Soup and bread follow at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.
Nominations Opened For
Green Business Awards
Sitka Global Warming Group in conjunction with the Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce and Sitka Conservation Society invites owners, employees, members, and customers alike to nominate a favorite local business, agency, not-for-profit group, school or other entity for a 2019 Sitka Green Business Award.
The nomination form is available online at https://tinyurl.com/y75ltut8. Paper copies of the nomination form are available at the Sitka Chamber of Commerce. The nomination form includes information about the awards and instructions for nominations. The nomination deadline for the first round of 2019 awards is Jan. 30.
For the 10th and final year, SGWG will recognize and thank local businesses for using “green” practices and market those businesses on the web and through other means. Through the Sitka Green Business Awards, SGWG has provided businesses with information and education and support on ways to save money, conserve resources, and contribute to community.
Using energy/money-saving, waste-reducing recommendations from local businesses, the group created the list of over 40 green practices showing what local businesses are already doing to save money. The practices determine the “winners” of the green business awards.
The program’s four levels recognize different levels of commitment towards green practices. The more actions that a business does to help the environment, the higher the recognition level they received.
Award levels are as follows: Businesses using: 1-5 green practices, Bronze Award; 6-10 green practices, Silver Award; 11-15 green practices, Gold Award; and 16 or more green practices, Platinum Award.
Two special recognition categories are available for businesses involved in a one-time, major environmental initiative or in on-going environmental initiatives.
The public is invited to send nominations for special recognition to sitkagreenbusiness@gmail.com. Questions about the program can be directed to Michelle at 747-2708.
