First Aid, CPR

Class on Jan. 25

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a mariner’s first aid and CPR/AED class 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 25 at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

The cost for the class is $125, including sales tax. Mariners may register online at www.amsea.org or call (907) 747-3287.

The class will cover CPR & automatic external defibrillators; treatment of choking; medical emergencies; trauma; environmental hazards; patient assessment; medical communications; drowning and hypothermia; and common fishing injuries.

Those who complete the class will receive a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted, two-year certificate issued by the American Safety and Health Institute.

 

Sitka Skippers Sets

Jump Rope WorkshopSitka Skippers will host a jump rope workshop to introduce new jumpers to the fundamentals of the sport 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Keet Gooshi Heen gym.

Those in kindergarten and up can sign up. The cost is $50 per jumper, which includes a new jump rope and snacks.

Participants will follow COVID-19 mitigations as set by the Sitka School District. Masks are required.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Send an email, including name and age of jumper as well as contact phone number, to sitkaskippers@gmail.com to sign up a jumper. The organization will be accepting sign ups in the order that emails are received and send back a confirmation email. Future opportunities will be planned if the session fills up, organizers said. 

 

Coconut Chicken

Class to Register

Coconut lovers can join the Sitka Kitch’s virtual class on how to make Tanzanian coconut chicken as part of its Cooking With Culture class series.

Nalani James will teach the virtual class 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, via Zoom.

James chose the East African dish, also known as Kuku Paka, for the wintertime, in celebration of spices being the “original medicine.” 

‘‘Spices not only add flavor, but also boost your health and immunity,’’ she said.

The class costs $20, and eight people are needed to register. Ingredients are not provided; however, a list of them and equipment needed will be sent to registrants. A link to the Zoom event also will be provided. 

The registration deadline is 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19. Space is limited. Register and pre-pay using credit/debit cards or PayPal on the Sitka Kitch EventSmart online registration page, http://sitkakitch.eventsmart.com (click on class title). Those wanting to pre-pay with cash or check, can call Chandler O’Connell or Kylee Jones at Sitka Conservation Society (747-7509) to arrange a payment.

On Dean’s List

Jessica Davis, a junior studying accounting, is among Harding University students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the fall 2021 semester.

To be eligible, a student must be carrying 12 or more hours with a 3.65 or higher grade-point average and no incompletes.

Harding University is a private Christian, liberal arts university located in Searcy, Arkansas.

Davis is a 2019 Sitka High School graduate.

 

Tsunami Wrestling

Program Begins

Sitka Tsunami Wrestling will begin Jan. 10 at Blatchley Middle School main gym. Instruction is 5-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tsunami Wrestling focuses on folk-style wrestling and is offered to kids in kindergarten through fifth grades.
