Lifelong Sitka resident John Rodney Ricaporte died this morning in a hospital in Anchorage. He was age 54.
Dorothy M. Johnson
Dies in Washington
Former longtime Sitka resident Dorothy M. “Dottie” Johnson died July 17 at Bainbridge Island, Washington, at age 85.
She will be buried in Sitka National Cemetery, near her husband, Chuck Johnson.

Passes Away at 82
Martha June Howard, a Pioneers Home resident, died here on July 17. She was age 82.
Utility Poles
To be Replaced
The city electric department crews will be working on a utility pole replacement project 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, on Marine Street between Erler and Seward streets.
No through traffic will be allowed during that time. Traffic on the northern side of Marine Street will be rerouted down Erler Street. Residents of Marine Street will have access from Seward Street, the city said.
Tribal Council
Meets July 21
The Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, via Zoom.
The Tribal Council will review the first reading of the drug and alcohol ordinance. Those who wish to make a public comment are being encouraged to attend the Zoom meeting. Contact STA at 747-3207 for the Zoom link information.

Open Water
Challenge Set
The Baranof Barracuda Swim Club will host the 12th Annual Change Your Latitude-57 Degree North Open Water Challenge 8 a.m. Aug. 8.
It starts at the Sitka Sound Science Center and loops along the waters near the Sitka National Historical Park and back.
The event includes 10K, 6k and 3k courses for swimmers 16 and older and a 1K course open to all ages.
‘‘Race organizers are excited to host one of the northernmost ocean races in the U.S., if not the world,’’ the club said. ‘‘Opportunities for spectators to cheer on the swimmers are numerous and the finish promises to be exciting with nearly 50 swimmers in the race this year.’’
BBSC and Change Your Latitude race organizers are seeking volunteers to help provide safety for swimmers.
‘‘Kayaks, small boats and shore help will be necessary and everyone participating will be ensured a great time,’’ the press release said.

Barracudas Set
Tryouts July 30
The Baranof Barracuda Swim Club will hold team tryouts 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Blatchley pool.
Swimmers should arrive prepared to swim two lengths of the pool, one length freestyle (crawl) with face in the water, and one length backstroke.
Swimmers age 5 and older are welcome to try out. Coach Kevin will evaluate swimmer’s ability level and inform swimmers and parents at the end of the tryout which group and time will be appropriate for each athlete.
