Restroom Hours

Extended at Park

Sitka National Historical Park has extended the open hours for the public restrooms at its visitor center. Restrooms are now open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week.

‘‘We are increasing services slowly, as the park is ready,’’ a press release said. ‘‘Thank you, Sitka community, for your patience and cooperation as we make our transitions toward more normal operations.’’

For additional information visit the park’s webpage at www.nps.gov/sitk or call 747-0132.

Sauerkraut and Fermented Pickles Class Listed Via Zoom

Learn how to make sauerkraut and fermented pickles with Sarah Lewis through the Sitka Kitch via Zoom 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 25.

Sauerkraut, kimchi and other lacto-fermented vegetables can be made at home. The class will make sauerkraut and mixed vegetable pickles, and  learn techniques for other vegetables.

Lewis is UAF Cooperative Extension Agent for Southeast Alaska. The goal of these workshops is for participants to interact with Lewis and each other while cooking together; asking questions, seeing what others are making, and actively learning new skills (or brushing up on existing ones).

Before class, students will receive a delivery of the ingredients to Sitka residents, so the home address should be provided when registering. A list of supplies and equipment to have on hand also will be provided.

Classes will be offered via Zoom. Registration closes the Thursday evening before the class. A class link will emailed following registration.

The registration deadline is 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 23. The class costs $20, which is half of the usual class fee. Register and pre-pay using credit/debit cards or PayPal on the EventSmart page, http://sitkakitch.eventsmart.com (click on class title).

Current (paid) members of the Sitka Food Co-Op are now able to attend the online classes for $10 each. Use the Sitka Food Co-Op ticket when registering and send an email to sitkafoodcoop@gmail.com letting them know.

For information about the class, contact Jasmine Shaw at 747-9440.

Lewis also will teach a virtual class on cooking with canned and smoked salmon 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8.
