For Roger Higley
A celebration of the life of Roger DeWitt Higley is planned Tuesday, June 22. Mr. Higley died on April 5, 2021.
A graveside service at the Sitka National Cemetery starts at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at Harrigan Centennial Hall at 11:45 a.m. A light lunch will be served and memories shared.
Carol ‘Sue’ Falkner
Life Celebration Set
A celebration of life service to share all the joy of Carol “Sue” Falkner’s life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Sitka Christian Center.
‘‘Every day is a new opportunity to choose joy, despite sorrow,’’ family members said. ‘‘We have much to be thankful for and plan to be together to give thanks for her. Please bring your joyful memories to share.’’
Pastries and other refreshments will be available.
Life Celebration
For Martha Barker
A potluck picnic will be held for Martha (Marti) Sussan Baker, 72, at 4 p.m. June 20 to celebrate her life and love for family, friends and the outdoors. It will be at the Halibut Point Recreation Area pavilion. Marti passed away in the early morning May 24, 2021, in the Sitka Pioneers Home.
“We invite friends and family to bring a dish and memories to share,’’ the family said.

Sitka Youth Soccer
Season to Register
The Sitka Youth Soccer summer season for those in kindergarten through 12th grades runs July 13-Aug. 26.
Meeting times are: kindergarten through first grade, 5:15-6 p.m.; second and third grades, 5:15-6:15 p.m.; fourth through sixth grades, 6:15-7:30 p.m.; and seventh through 12th, 6:15-7:45 p.m.

Call for Events
The Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce board has chosen “Red, White & Blue” as the theme for the 4th of July parade.
Grand marshal will be former Sitka Fire Chief Dave Miller, who retired from the City of Sitka in the fall of 2020 and was instrumental in supporting the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The parade will begin at 1 p.m. on July 4. The route begins on Lake Street, proceeds down Lincoln Street toward City Hall, and ends on Harbor Drive.
Registration is required and forms can be picked up at the Sitka Chamber office at 104 Lake Street, or on the Chamber’s website at sitkachamber.com. Registrations must be submitted by Monday, June 28.
Organizations or groups conducting community events during the festivities, to be held Thursday, July 1 through Sunday, July 4, can have their events listed in this year’s schedule.

Artist Residency
Program Position

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is seeking an Alaska Native artist to fill one position for the Alaska Native Artist Residency Program.
Dates of the program are Aug. 21-Sept. 12. Benefits of the residency include an artist stipend of $2,200, a food per diem to offset food costs, lodging and travel to and from Sitka. Artists are paid to create their artwork in the museum in an open-studio-like format and are paid for their time accessing and studying the museum’s exceptional Alaska Native ethnographic and art collection.
Artists-in-residence focus on traditional or contemporary Native art forms including but not limited to wood carving, ivory carving, silver engraving, beading, skin, gut and fish skin sewing, drum making, and basket or textile weaving, drumming and dancing.
Artists can benefit from utilizing the museum’s collections for research and meeting visitors while working in the museum gallery.

Fireworks Display
Donations Sought
The organizers of this year’s 4th of July fireworks display are calling for donations.
The total cost for the show is $21,000.
Some leftover funds are available; however, organizers are hoping to have a slush fund to cover any unexpected costs in the future.
Those who wish to sponsor the fireworks display this year can donate by mailing or dropping off a check made out to Sitka 4th of July Fireworks to 208 Lake Street, Suite B. Funds can be sent via Venmo @Sitka4thOfJulyFireWorks.

Sportfish Rules
Given for Kings
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced revised sport fishing regulations for king salmon in Southeast Alaska and Yakutat.
Regulations will be effective 12:01 a.m. Monday, June 21, through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, March 31.
The resident bag and possession limit is two king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length. From Oct. 1 through March 31, 2022, a sport angler may use two rods when fishing for king salmon, a person using two rods under this regulation may retain only salmon.
The nonresident bag and possession limit is one king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length. From Jan. 1 through June 30, a nonresident’s total harvest limit is three king salmon 28 inches or greater in length.
From July 1 through July 7, a nonresident’s total harvest limit is two king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length, and any king salmon harvested by the nonresident from Jan. 1 through June 30 will apply toward the two fish total harvest limit.
From July 8 through Dec. 31, a nonresident’s total harvest limit is one king salmon 28 inches or greater in length, and any king salmon harvested by the nonresident from Jan. 1 through July 7 will apply toward the one fish total harvest limit.
Immediately upon landing and retaining a king salmon a nonresident must enter the species, date, and location on their sport fishing license or on a nontransferable harvest record.
Emblem Club Meets
Sitka Emblem Club will hold a social meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.
No business and social meetings will be held in July and August, except for the officers.
