Cooking Class
Set for July 9
Nalani James will teach Sitka Kitch’s first in-person class since March 2020 on July 9.
Participants will learn how to make tortilla soup as part of the Cooking With Culture class series 4-6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at the Sitka Kitch community commercial kitchen, in the basement of the Sitka Lutheran Church.
The soup has an array of colors – James chose it because she loves tuxedo corn from the Southwest. Vegetarian and dairy-free options are available.
It is the second year of her Cooking With Culture class series.
The class cost is $40, and eight people are needed to register. Ingredients are provided in the registration price. Students may want to take a container for leftovers.
The registration deadline is 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6. Register and pre-pay using credit/debit cards or PayPal on the Sitka Kitch EventSmart online registration page, http://sitkakitch.eventsmart.com (click on class title). For 4th Fireworks
The Hames Corporation is once again acting as primary sponsor for the fireworks show during Sitka’s Independence Day celebration, 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 1.
‘‘As we have done for the past two years, we are reaching out to our fellow local businesses, organizations, and community-minded folks to help fund the show,’’ Mary Hames said in a press release.
The total amount needed is $20,000, which will cover the cost of the fireworks as well as travel and lodging for the pyrotechnicians who will come from Anchorage.
‘‘We have been so appreciative of the past support we have received for this fun event,’’ Hames said.
Those wishing to partner with the Hameses can drop off cash or a check made out to “Sitka 4th of July Fireworks” at the Hames Corp office at 208 Lake Street, Suite B, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or Venmo @sitka4thofjulyfireworks.
