Nominations Sought

For Youth Heroes

As part of its Summer of Heroes scholarship program, Alaska Communications will honor up to six Alaska youths, ages 6-18, who are making a positive difference in their communities with $1,500 scholarships.

Anyone can nominate a young person in their life. A hero can be any youth who has: volunteered or raised funds for a cause; made a difference in school through education or sports; inspired others to take action; made a contribution to his or her community; or considered others’ needs before their own.

This year, a hero’s efforts may have come to light during the pandemic when he or she took action to help others in the community during this challenging time.

Now in its 10th year, the Summer of Heroes program aims to promote awareness and support for youth development programs throughout the state.

Learn more about the Summer of Heroes program and fill out a nomination at www.alaskacommunications.com/summerofheroes.

Photo Contest

By United Way

The Southeast Alaska Independence Day photo contest is being held to bring awareness to the United Way of Southeast Alaska and benefit 34 nonprofits in our communities.

‘‘We want to see how you celebrate the 4th of July in this amazing part of the country we get to call home,’’ the United Way said in a press release. ‘‘Create a spark in your community this 4th of July and show us how you will be celebrating.’’

Individuals can submit a photo for $500, $250 and $100 cash prizes.

‘‘As this year’s 4th of July celebrations may look a bit different due to COVID-19 that does not mean we cannot have some fun,’’ the press release said. ‘‘Please show us your favorite patriotic photos of yourself, friends, and family, your pets, and your vehicles.’’

Submissions will be taken until midnight on July 8 and voting will close on July 10. The winner will be determined and announced on July 14.

‘‘The sooner you get your photo in the longer you have to acquire votes from your community members,’’ United Way said.

Ten extra points will be awarded to those who are able include a United Way logo into their photo.
