SYLC to Raise

Awareness of

Masculinity Norms

The Sitka Youth Leadership Committee says it has launched a ‘‘Mold Your Masculinity’’ campaign aimed at raising awareness about harmful masculinity norms and redefine what it means to be a man in today’s society.

SYLC encourages men and boys to embrace their true selves and not succumb to societal pressures to conform to harmful norms, the organization said.

The three-part series of graphics tells a story.

‘‘The first part recognizes we are all steeped in harmful norms and unknowingly play a role in perpetuating them, so we must work together to rise above them,’’ SYLC said.

Society defines masculinity as being physically strong, aggressive, superior and in control. Young men who conform to these limiting gender norms are at increased risk for poor mental health, risky behavior, suicidal thoughts, and perpetration of violent crimes, the organization said.

SYLC invites all to write a letter to reflect on the impacts of harmful masculinity norms and how to help create a more accepting and inclusive community. Letters will become part of SYLC’s “Dear Men” series, a compilation of stories.

Participants will be entered into a prize drawing. To learn more, visit sitkayouthleadership.com, on Instagram, or find one of the organization’s submission boxes around town.

SYLC is a group of teens dedicated to working on topics in the community, including shifting norms around masculinity.

‘‘Together, we can break free from the confines of harmful masculinity norms,’’ SYLC said.
