Car Parade Set
The 4th of July Older and Unique Car Parade is seeking cars to participate in it, and alerting neighborhoods when the parade will pass through.
The parade route will leave Whale Park at 10:30 a.m. sharp, headed toward town. Cars will go up Lake Street at the round-a-about, turn left on Peterson Street and then up Edgecumbe Drive. Then go down Cascade Street and turn right on Halibut Point Road. At the Halibut Point Recreation Area, cars will turn around and head back to town. They will take a right on Katlian, right turn on Lincoln, and then back to Harbor Drive, ending under the O’Connell Bridge.

Fish Skin Leather
Workshop Offered
Karen Denis McIntyre will teach a two-day evening series to process, treat and create fish skin leather at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
It will be taught 5-8:30 p.m. June 7 and 9. The cost is $125, which includes catered dinners from Enoki Eatery.

Work Party Set
At Boatshop
The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will hold a volunteer work party to restore exterior walls on the Japonski Island Boatshop 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 10.
Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome, and can take their own gloves and tools if they have them. Volunteers can come for part or all the time. Project leaders will provide training in historic preservation principles and methods. Coffee and snacks are provided.

Meets June 8
Sitka Emblem Club 142 will hold a business meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Sitka Elks Lodge. All members are encouraged to attend.
Water Line Repair
On Wolff Drive
City Public Works is working to repair a water line on Wolff Drive, and the road is closed between 112 and 116 Wolff Drive until further notice.
Although not anticipated, customers will be informed if water in the area will need to be shut off to perform repairs.

Evacuation Drill
Scheduled June 15
The City and Borough of Sitka’s electric department will conduct a full-scale high hazard evacuation drill functional test 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15.
The test will consist of activating the sirens and systems within the Blue Lake Campground, Blue Lake Powerhouse, and Gary Paxton Industrial Park area.

Family ‘Playdate’
At Playground
Families are invited to a Community Playground Playdate 4:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, summer solstice, at the community playground.
Events will include playground bingo with a $50 gift card drawing at 5:30 p.m. Solstice cookies will be available.

4-H Plans Walk
To See Sitka Trees
Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H will have a free guided walk of Sitka’s downtown trees 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, beginning at Totem Square.
‘‘We’ll walk up and over Noow Tlein and along Harbor Drive and Lincoln Street before ending up at the Sitka National Historical Park,’’ organizers said. ‘‘We will take in redwoods, crabapples, European mountain ash, and a Glastonbury thorn before visiting the Money Bear.’’

Concert Friday
Sitka Music Festival will host a 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, evening concert at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
It will feature works by Montgomery, Mozart, Waxman and more.

VA Representatives
In Sitka June 29
Veterans Benefits and Health Care Administration representatives will assist veterans and family members 2-7 p.m. June 29 at the Sitka Elks Lodge.
Attendees may: file claims for disability compensation; sign up for VA healthcare; get VA healthcare ID cards (REAL ID); request personnel and medical records; request headstones for deceased veterans (including ATG); provide initial toxic screenings for eligible veterans; and provide general assistance and ask questions.
If possible, take separation paperwork (DD-214 or NGB-22/23b) and relevant medical records. VA ID cards require state or federal identification.
Veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and surrounding countries may have new benefits related to toxic exposures, a press release said.

Cottage Food
Business Class On
Those who want to learn what they can make in a home-based foods kitchen to sell at a farmers market, and when a certified commercial kitchen is needed can join a class on the basics of starting a cottage foods business 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the Sitka Public Library.
The class will discuss the state’s food safety regulations, how to test products, how to market products, and which foods are legal to sell under the state’s cottage foods exemptions. These include baked goods, jams and jellies. Which items require a higher level of kitchen and quality control, such as canned salmon, also will be studied.
The cottage food business basics class will feature Sarah Lewis of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service’s Juneau office and Charles Bingham of the Sitka Local Foods Network, who will discuss how to participate in the Sitka Farmers Market.
