Thursday’s Sentinel story on the joint effort of the Sitka Tribe of Alaska and Sitka Conservation Society to distribute free meals to Sitkans under 18 omitted the role of Kids Kupboard, a Wasilla non-profit dedicated to ending childhood hunger.
Kids Kupboard supports more than 30 youth food programs in Alaska.
Conservation Society community catalyst Chandler O’Connell said that Kids Kupboard acts as the program sponsor and employs the kitchen team and ensures compliance with U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines.
She noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires a program sponsor for participation in summer foods programs.
Sitka is the only Southeast Alaskan town with Kids Kupboard initiative, O’Connell said.

“We were thrilled to be able to connect with an expert in USDA programs who could get something started here so quickly,” O’Connell said.
The food distribution program is set to continue through the summer. Distribution hours are 8:30 a.m. through noon on Tuesdays and Fridays, at the STA building parking lot, 201 Siginaka Way. Each bag has food for seven days of breakfast and lunch.
