Leo Jimmy filed today as a candidate for Assembly in the October 6 municipal election.

Jimmy is the first candidate for the two open seats on the Assembly. Gary Paxton filed Monday for a second term as mayor.

“My platform is mainly surrounding treatment and seeing what we can do as an Assembly to bring back that level of care that was shut down in 2013,” Jimmy told the Sentinel, referring to the Bill Brady Healing Center for alcohol and drug treatment programs. “Treatment and mental health.”

Jimmy said he also would like to strengthen government-to-government relationships, and bring organizations and individuals together in a town hall format in order to solve problems or take on projects. He remembers such meetings from a few years ago.

“People willing to get together and figure out what’s best for the city, for all,” he said. Jimmy said he hopes that the addition of “new blood” on the Assembly will be helpful for the body.

“I hope to bring that and learn as well about what the town needs and how to work with what I already know,” he said.

Jimmy was born in Anchorage, grew up in Juneau and Haines, and graduated from Ketchikan High School in 1985. He has lived in Sitka since 2012, and has a number of family members here.

He is currently employed by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska in the Sitka Tribal Enterprises division. He is the facilities attendant for the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi community house. He also is the facilities attendant at the Chamber of Commerce building on Lake Street.

In addition to the Assembly and mayor positions, two seats are open on the School Board.

The filing period closes on Aug. 7. Information on running for office is available on the city website and by calling the clerk’s office at 747-1811.
