Man Charged With Assault

A Sitka man was charged Sunday after a family member was assaulted in a home on Kasiana Island and medevacked to Seattle.

Police charged Patrick O’Brien, 28, with a felony count of assault in first degree (domestic violence), assault in the fourth degree (domestic violence), a weapons charge of possessing firearms while intoxicated (domestic violence) and interfering with a report of domestic violence.

Police had received a call at 9 p.m. reporting the assault. Officers and EMTs took a city Emergency Response Vessel and a private boat to Kasiana Island, three miles northwest of town.Several permanent and seasonal residents live there.

Officers found the victim, a man in his 60s, had “substantial head and facial fractures” from being struck in the head by a blunt object. Police did not have the details today on the object. 

The injured man was taken to Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center then medevacked to Seattle, police said.

Officers returned to the island to take O’Brien into custody. He sustained a few minor injuries but did not need hospital care.

He was arraigned Monday, and was being held today on $500,000 bail, and third-party custodian.

His next court date is a preliminary hearing March 26 in Sitka.
