Holy Lent Service

At Methodist Church

The public is invited to attend Ash Wednesday services 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the United Methodist Church, 303 Kimsham Street.

 

Marine Safety

Training on Tap

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will conduct a marine safety instructor training class in Astoria, Oregon, at the Clatsop Community College, MERTS Campus, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. May 23-27.

The course prepares individuals to  teach cold-water survival procedures, the use of marine safety equipment, and vessel safety drills. The MSIT is the only marine safety instructor course, specific to commercial fishing, that’s accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The cost for the class is $995 and scholarships are available for qualifying commercial fishermen with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health, the U.S. Coast Guard, and AMSEA members. Mariners can register online at www.amsea.org or call (907)747-3287.

 

Stability Class For

Commercial Fishers

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a fishing vessel stability awareness and damage control workshop 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

Instructor Jerry Dzugan will cover the physics of vessel stability, stability terminology, watertight integrity, operational considerations, damage control, stability calculations & evaluation, stability guide formats, and case studies.

The workshop costs $100 for commercial fishermen, with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health, and AMSEA members.

Speaker Series

Sitka Chamber of Commerce will continue its Winter Speaker Series noon Wednesday via Zoom.

Camille Ferguson will give information about the Heritage and Cultural Tourism Conference in Sitka March 29-31. The three-day conference features learning, networking and business building with tourism and cultural professionals from across the United States.
