Screen Final Films
In Oscar Series
The Sitka Film Society and Coliseum Theater will present the final two short documentary films in the Oscars Film Festival series 5 p.m. Thursday at the Coliseum. The films are:
–‘‘Haulout’’ – UK, 25 min. A man is waiting in his hut in the desolate expanse of the Russian Arctic. He is holding out in order to observe a natural event that occurs there, every year. But ocean warming is taking its toll.
–‘‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’’ – USA, 40 min. Glamor, secrets, a White House on the brink of collapse. She was once as famous as Jackie O, but then she tried to take down a president.
Tickets are $10 at Old Harbor Books and the door. Those with questions may call Old Harbor Books.
Pioneers of Alaska
Meeting March 2
Pioneers of Alaska members only will hold a business meeting at 6 p.m. on March 2 at Centennial Hall.
Fifth-Graders Set
Spring Concert
The fifth grade band’s “Almost Spring Concert” will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Performing Arts Center.
The concert will feature full band pieces as well as solos and small ensembles. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.
Parks and Rec
Open Gym Set
The city Parks and Recreation will hold open skate and open gym on Saturdays at Blatchley Middle School.
Family open roller-skating will be held at the BMS multipurpose room 1-2:15 p.m.
Family open gym in the BMS main gym will be 1:30-3 p.m., followed by 35-plus open basketball 3-4:30 p.m.
Open gym punch cards for youths, adults, and families will be available for purchase at the Parks and Recreation office at BMS. Drop in admission is $3.81 for youths, $7.62 for adults, and $11.43 for families. Punch cards with 5 and 10 punches are discounted.

Electrification Expo
In Sitka March 18
Transition Sitka’s free Electrification Expo is scheduled 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 18 at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
All are invited to learn about weatherizing their home, heat pumps and financing, electric cars, E-bikes, how to take advantage of tax credits, and more.
Those attending will hear how to save money, see demonstrations, and learn how to reduce carbon emissions. Refreshments will be provided.

Scrappy Cooking
Workshop on Tap
The workshop ‘‘Scrappy Cooking 101’’ will be offered 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, through the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Participants will learn how to make vegetable stock, bone/fish broth, and pectin. Jennifer Nu from Ecotrust and the Southeast Sustainable Partnership will be instructor for the event at the Sitka Lutheran Church kitchen.
Nu will lead a focused discussion on what happens to food waste in Sitka, how to start composting, and tips and tricks for reducing food waste.

‘Coffee with Cats’
Event on March 4
The public is invited to join the Friends of Sitka Animal Shelter at its monthly meet and greet event, “Coffee with Cats,” 10 a.m.-noon March 4 at the animal shelter.
Stop by the Jarvis Street shelter to meet some of the current shelter feline residents and have a cup of coffee in the newly renovated cat room.
Sitka Tells Tales:
‘Dream Cycles’
Sitka Tells Tales, the local live storytelling series, will present “Dream Cycles: Tales of Visions, Imagination and Bicycles” 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, at Harbor Mountain Brewery Co.

Original Artist
Grind March 11
The Original Artist Grind will be staged 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.
The variety show features original music, dance, writing and visual art. An art exhibit and music by “Over 40 Knot Winds” flutists will be in the lobby before the show.
A homemade dessert can be taken to share and enter into the dessert contest. Hot beverages will be available.
It is the last show of the Grind’s 28th season, with season 29 opening in October. Tickets are $5 for all ages and are available at Old Harbor Books and at the door.
