Animal Shelter

Update Given

Sitka Animal Control Officer and Sitka Animal Shelter Director Ken Buxton has released the following information concerning the Coronavirus outbreak.

Sitka Animal Shelter: With the potential reality of citizens falling ill due to COVID-19 the animal shelter is soliciting foster care options in Sitka for animals.

‘‘This list will be built from email only keeping my phone line and voicemail actively clear of all but emergency calls,’’ he said. Adoption appointments are suspended for now; however, if you can take an animal to help reduce Shelter occupancy, then call as normal. Virus awareness and response should have us in government and society in general remaining very fluid and responding in ways best to support needs in timely and safe manner.’’

Animal Control: The stresses and demands on society are not to be heightened by ignoring good rule of law. Leash law is to be followed.

‘‘If you have a dog known to jump on people while on the cross trails it is time to take measures to prevent that from happening now,’’ Buxton said. ‘‘If you have a dog aggressive towards other dogs or to people other than those it knows well, then do not put the animal in a situation where things can go the wrong way. Citations for infractions will be issued by taking information, we will part ways and I will deliver that citation at a later date, but I will deliver. This is a time to minimize stress on ourselves and the system here in Sitka, not increase it.’’
