STA Expands

Its Herring Egg

Harvester Survey

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska is expanding its subsistence herring egg harvester survey to include an in-season harvest monitoring program.

The program came about from a recent court ruling requiring Alaska  Department of Fish and Game to implement 5 AAC 27.195 (a) and (b), which requires managers to distribute the commercial fishery over space and time and consider the quality and quantity of the subsistence harvest when making management decision regarding the commercial sac roe fishery, STA said in a press release.

‘‘This is a great opportunity to provide fishery managers with the information they need to provide a reasonable opportunity  for subsistence harvesters to meet their needs,’’ STA said. ‘‘Subsistence harvesters are encouraged to participate in the in-season monitoring program.’’

For information contact STA’s Resource Protection Director Jeff Feldpausch at 747-7469 or email jeff.feldpausch@sitkatribe-nsn.gov.

‘Alaska Hold’

Music Project

Has Re-Launch

The Alaska State Council on the Arts has announced the return of a program to serve Alaskans and celebrate Alaskan musicians: the Alaska Hold Music Project.

ASCA has worked with the Alaska Department of Administration over the past year on ways to improve and enhance the project, which benefits Alaskans who interact with their state government telephonically.

The project was started in 2018 with a set of songs by Alaskan artists curated by the staff at KTOO, the public radio and television station in Juneau, and the initial support of the office of Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. Songs played in rotation for a year, until the project was put on hold in early 2019 to allow for it to be reviewed and improved, the council said.

The Alaska Hold Music Project has been made possible with the support of the Department of Administration and the Alaska Independent Musicians Initiative, a non-profit which envisions a future where Alaska is an international hub of northern music, arts, and culture. AKIMI works to find ways to help Alaskan musicians develop and succeed professionally.

AKIMI called for submissions from Alaskan musicians, reviewed them for quality and merit, and forwarded a set of songs for review by ASCA and the Department of Administration. Ten were chosen.
