Proposals Sought

For State Event

The 40th Annual Statewide Elders and Youths Conference will be held Oct. 15-18 Oct. 15 at the Dena’ina Conference Center in Anchorage.

Native language teachers, artists, writers, cooks, culture bearers and providers, elders, community organizations, leaders, dance groups and performers can submit brief proposal.

Registration for attendees and community hall exhibitor booth will be coming soon.

Grief, Healing

Talking Circle Set

A grief and healing talking circle is planned 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, at Sitka Tribe of Alaska headquarters, 204 Siginaka Way, Suite 300, in the third floor conference room.

‘Speaking Grief’

Film to Show

Brave Heart Volunteers will host a viewing of ‘‘Speaking Grief’’ 6-8 p.m.  Tuesday, April 4, at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

The event starts at 6 p.m. with the movie starting at 6:30. Viewers can  join BHV for cookies and conversation after the movie.

 

Chess Club Sets

Tourney May 3

The Sitka Chess Club will host a tournament at Sitka Public Library, 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 3.

It will include two scholastic sections and one open or adult section. The tournament is open to all.

It will be four rounds with clock time controls set to 15 minutes. To register or with questions, contact Alexander Allison at allisona@sitkaschools.org, or sign up with him at Blatchley Middle School during chess club, 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesdays. 

 

Volunteers Sought

For Tourist Season

Visit Sitka is seeking people who want to meet new people and talk about Sitka.

Volunteers work at the Visitor Information Center downtown and at the welcome desk at the cruise terminal.

‘‘All we ask is that you bring your enthusiasm and commit to four hours per week through the summer,’’ Visit Sitka said in a news release. ‘‘The job is fun and includes training.’’

Port, Harbors Panel

Seeks Volunteer

The City and Borough of Sitka Port and Harbors Commission is seeking a volunteer to serve on the newly formed Tourism Task Force, established by the Assembly to facilitate Sitka’s transition to long-term tourism management.

The commission will recommend an individual for appointment by the Assembly to serve on the task force. The member will advocate for the interests and priorities of the commission, as well as the fishing and maritime industries in Sitka.

Applications will be reviewed at the April 12 commission meeting and given to the Assembly for appointment on April 25.

Seeks Representative

Parenting in Digital

Age to be Discussed

The public is invited to join Homer police officer Lt. Ryan Browning for a presentation and conversation on parenting in the digital age.

It will be held 6 p.m. Friday, April 7, at Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi  community house. 

 The presentation is open to teens, adults, parents and guardians.

‘‘This will be very candid, and probably uncomfortable conversation on what your children are seeing and experiencing online and how to help your children navigate responsibly and safely,’’ organizer Mary Suminski said. ‘‘Please come and participate – the risks are too great for our children not to be informed.’’

ALFA Fishermen’s

Expo April 4-5

The Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association Spring Fishermen’s Expo is set April 4-5.

The virtual event is for commercial and subsistence fishermen of all gear types and others in the fishing industry.

Free, interactive sessions will be on: young fishermen’s classes presented by Alaska Boats and Permits; Alaska Sea Grant’s FishBiz website and tools; break-even analysis from Spruce Root; insurance options for fishermen from Sea Mountain Insurance; skipper training for ALFA’s Crewmember Training Program; and other topics.

Babies and Books

Spring Program On

Sitka Babies and Books invites families of kids ages birth to 4 years to a “Welcome Spring” celebration at the Sitka Public Library.

The event will be held 10:30 a.m.  Saturday, March 25. Special guests Gájaa Héen dancers will share the celebration of the spring season through dance and music. 

Registration is required to receive a copy of a free book about the program’s theme.  

Books are purchased with a grant from Sitka Legacy Foundation, an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation.

Easter Egg Hunt

Set for April 8

The annual community Easter egg hunt is planned noon Saturday, April 8, at the Keet Gooshi Heen playground.

The free event is sponsored by Sitka Assembly of God church.

It will include 10,000 eggs, face painting, hot chocolate, hot dogs and other activities.
