Artist Kirtkness

Zoom Talk Set

A Zoom talk and discussion with wood artist Jim Kirkness of Sitka is planned 5 p.m. April 1, sponsored by the Island Artists Gallery.

Kirkness is building a reproduction card table from the Federal period of American woodworking (1785-1815).

‘‘This delicate table has been the perfect project for a COVID year keeping Jim enthralled for ever so many hours,’’ the gallery said. ‘‘Watching him talk about this piece as he creates reminds us of the great craftmanship that existed in the days before Ikea. Just touring his workshop and  seeing the tools he has built is amazing.’’

He also will show some of his other projects.

‘‘Jim’s humble garage woodshop is a veritable treasure of beautifully functional hand tools, necessary power tools, and wonderful hunks of local wood in all stages of discovery,’’ the gallery said. ‘‘Jim Kirkness is a fine craftsman woodworker who says, ‘I never really know what the piece will become until I begin the process of turning, carving, really sculpting the wood,’ into the masterful finished products.

‘‘To hold one of Jim’s bowls in your hands is to feel what true craftsmanship really is,’’ the gallery said. ‘‘The beautiful wood rocking chairs and stools are equally inspiring and every so comfortable. Jim enhances the life in the wood as he works it.’’

More about Kirkness can be viewed at www.islandartistsgallery.
